REDFERN

GET TO KNOW
THE AREA

A pocket of Sydney that was once notorious for its underbelly activities, Redfern has more recently been turning heads for other reasons. In the midst of gentrification, the area is rapidly becoming a thriving enclave of Indigenous culture with an enviable bar and art scene – a place to find beautifully restored homes within minutes of the CBD.

Lifestyle

Situated on the outskirts of Sydney’s CBD, Redfern is a suburb that has edge and grit – an attitude that’s represented in its arts venues, bars and café scene.

Regent Street is home to funky and eclectic bars whilst Redfern Street is the main area for local shopping and dining. In the midst of it all is Redfern Park offering up an alluring green space where families linger around the playground and water features.

Loved for its proximity to other Sydney attractions, locals don’t have to wander too far from home – whether it’s to stretch out at neighbouring Moore Park or get a cultural fix at Carriageworks.

Iconic street art in the powerful colours of red, black and yellow, pays homage to the strong local Indigenous community and heritage.

The infamous area surrounding, Eveleigh Street, Caroline Street, Hugo Street and Wine Street, aka ‘The Block’, is undergoing redevelopment and gentrification. Students descend on the neighbourhood to get to nearby Sydney University, making this small part of Redfern more approachable.

Redfern is an area to keep an eye on as it continues to evolve into one of Sydney’s trendiest enclaves.

Neighbours

A neighbourhood that was once given a wide berth has become a popular stomping ground for professionals and students.

With the University of Sydney within arm’s reach, locals join the commuters who flow out of Redfern Station throughout the day, taking advantage of the quick walk to class, whilst professionals love the quick 10-minute train ride into the heart of the CBD.

Redfern is home to a diverse range of socioeconomic groups and ethnicities, and although there is a strong Indigenous culture, Redfern continues to be the first port of call for many immigrants, with about half the population born overseas.

CARRIAGEWORKS

Situated in neighbouring Eveleigh, Carriageworks has transformed the old Eveleigh Rail Yards into a contemporary multi-arts centre which features a program that reflects cultural and social diversity. It is open daily.

FARMERS MARKET

Popular Eveleigh Farmers Market is held every Saturday at Carriageworks, featuring local produce and building a desirable foodie scene that is capturing the attention of Sydneysiders.

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS

Redfern’s love affair with South Sydney Rabbitohs, a rugby league club, has endured through its turbulent past, but with the help of actor Russell Crowe, the club has stabilised and is an endearing presence in this neighbourhood.

BARS

The bar scene around Regent and Redfern Street has an addictive edge; some places have a more relaxed tone, whilst others are a wild ride for the senses.
