Nina Maya is an Australian based, Interior Designer who specialises in beautiful bespoke residential and commercial spaces. Her passion for Interior design and for creating meticulously curated, layered spaces is at the core of her practice and she leads her team with extensive design expertise, a career spanning a decade and a portfolio of highly refined projects.
How long have you been an Interior Designer for?
I have run Nina Maya Interiors for four years, before that I ran my own fashion label for six years.
What has been a highlight in your career, so far?
Having the honour of re-designing the iconic Opera Bar at the Sydney Opera House.
Where do you find your design inspiration?
Travel, magazines, blogs, the arts and spending time with my wonderful clients.
What are the top three common styling mistakes people are making in their homes?
Outdated flooring, mismatched bathroom tiles and lack of light and flow through the spaces.
What tips can you recommend to maximise space in the home?
Opening walls and creating full height doorways where possible, clever use of skylights and large full height windows always create a sense of space and light.
First it was accents of rose gold, then it was the Scandinavian movement; what trends do you see coming through now and as a home seller, what trends are best to leave behind?
As a home seller, some trends best to leave out would be Subway tiles, which always date a kitchen. Copper and marble accents have been overused.
Some of my favourite trends coming through are clever unexpected uses of Terrazzo and old material being made new again. Also, the innovative large formal porcelain tiles that can be used to clad floors, walls and benchtops for a super clean modern contemporary look.
Regarding style and architecture, what is your favourite area in Sydney?
Are there different sets of rules when styling an apartment versus a house? If so, what are the top three?
When styling an apartment, you have a little less space to work with so you want to create a distinct feature in each room to draw the eye. A couple of rules would be stick to a neutral colour palette, use mirrors to open a small space and always try to work with three points of lighting in each room to create a great ambience.
When updating a space, which parts of the home would you recommend investing in for a strong return?
The wet areas are often the best areas to invest in (i.e. new kitchen and bathroom updates) and increase the perceived value of a property.
A lot of homeowners love the open plan living style – what are your tips for defining different living spaces in an open plan design without closing it off?
A great way to define different living space in open plans is with cleverly placed feature lighting and rugs, i.e. use a large rug to anchor in a lounge setting and a feature pendant dropped over the dining area always works wonders.
What would your number one piece of advice be to someone who is:
A. Designing/styling from scratch. Include lots of natural greenery and a great feature piece of art to anchor the space.
B. Revamping an interior space. Start with the floor. Once you get this right everything else will fall into place.
