Known for their elegant, natural and handmade homewares, Kristie and Loren, founders of the effortlessly chic home store Commune in North Bondi, have been beachside locals for years. Wholefoods, freshly squeezed juices and virtuous salads are the main orders of the day – as well as a quick dip in the sea at Bondi Beach, naturally – but there are plenty of charming local cafés, bars and trendy boutiques that Kristie and Loren swear by, so couldn't wait to get the lowdown on their go-to haunts. We were lucky enough to sit down with the design savvy duo to find out where they most like to eat, drink, shop and hang out in this stylish coastal enclave.
How long have you been an Bondi local ?
Loren: I was born here.
You know you’re a local when you..
Leave Bondi for the Summer - way too many people.
Tell us three things you love about being in Bondi and why?
The beach – for obvious reasons, but also I have so many memories of my dad teaching my brother and I to surf here. The community, especially the locals I know that have grown up here. Plus Bondi is a harlequin of sorts – a melting pot of old and new and rich and poor and creative and banker. She has so many faces, so many colours.
The Shop and Wine Bar
Kept secret in your local neighbourhood?
It used to be The Royal, mostly locals and none of the riff raff but Hemmes bought it recently. I feel like there are no secrets in Bondi anymore! A couple of friends in Bondi have started a not for profit carefully curated vintage online store called Bestow & Co, all profits go to Lou’s Place, a womens refuge in Surry Hills. You can find them on instagram. Also The Shop & Wine Bar - not so secret but a beautiful family making beautiful food with a fab wine list.
What is an Bondi local gem?
The Rat House at North Bondi. Beers with the best view of Bondi.
For a luxurious staycation in Sydney, where would it be and why?
Loren: Park Hyatt.
Kristie: The Shangri-La. Views of the whole harbour from your rooms, cocktails at Blu Bar on 36 – you cant beat the view up there. The whole of Sydney Harbour and its surrounds.
Your go-to holiday destination and where do you stay when you’re there?
Loren: Sri Lanka, southern province – not telling where ;)
Kristie: Yup we went on this trip together. Sri Lanka is incredible!! Also adore Bingin in Bali, Micks Place – we had a villa with a plunge pool overlooking the surf break, absolute paradise. You feel so secluded up there, away from the hustle and bustle in the main parts of Bali – which I now really dislike!!
Ultimate travel destination?
Loren :Travelling through South America. I’d love to travel Nicaragua/ Costa Rica etc on my wish list.
Kristie: Italy! Haven't made it there yet.
Next Australian travel destination?
Loren: I just got back from Currarong on the south coast, so many beautiful secret beaches.
Kristie: Noosa/Sunshine Coast.
Loren: I’m heading to Hawaii for my friend’s birthday and the Pipe Pro.
Kristie: New Zealand for a friends wedding
