A Beauty Editor’s Guide to the Best Beauty Spots in the Eastern Suburbs

Former Beauty Editor at The Australian Women’s Weekly and founder of The Beauty Insider, Kelly Baker, reveals her top beauty spots in the east to escape for a pamper.

Q&A with Kelly Baker

Where is the best place to get a facial treatment?

There are some truly excellent facialists in the Eastern Suburbs but my personal favourite is Face Plus Medispa in Bondi Junction. The herbal peels they do there are genius. They feel a little like being sandpapered so it's not a super relaxing treatment, but it leaves skin looking beautifully dewy fresh and plump. And of course there are relaxing facial treatments too if that's more your thing.

What do your two favourite hairdressers do to keep you coming back?

I swear by Anthony Nader at RAW in Surry Hills for all things hair. I'm a John Sewell of Potts Point fan too. Both salons are warm and welcoming and don't have that 'you're not cool enough to be in here’ vibe. Even my kids get their hair cut by Anthony. He's charming, funny, sweet and an awesome hairdresser. John is my go-to when I want to funk it up a little and he does a killer blow out.

Where do you like going to get your brows and eyelashes shaped and tinted respectively?

My brows and lashes are happiest with Amy Jean Linnehan, at Amy Jean Eye Couture Sydney, without a doubt. I have had some disasters in my time and I never want to take that chance again. If I can't get in to see AJ I head to Love Those Lashes in Paddington. Neither is particularly cheap but I'm a believer in the concept that you get what you pay for.

If you were to take yourself for a day of pampering with a friend, where is your 'go to'? And what treatments would you splash out on?

Oh my, this is never going to happen. But, if I could pull it off I'd head to The Spa at The Park Hyatt. Yes, it’s just out of the east but it’s too good not to include. You can tailor your own treatments and make a day of it. I'd definitely get an aromatherapy massage and a full body scrub of some kind. A pedicure and a manicure is a must plus a rejuvenating facial. And I'd be requiring French champagne top ups the entire time, of course.

Where do you find the best service and treatment for laser?

This really depends on the type. If it's hair removal laser I'm pretty happy with the chains that do inexpensive deals although I inspect the premises closely beforehand and do a little asking around as to who is best. For anti-ageing and rejuvenating laser treatments I love Dr Jeremy Cumpston at the Ageless Clinic in Bondi.

If you could only get one treatment a month, what would you get and where would you go?

A pedicure. Definitely. You can't go past The Nail Lab in Darlinghurst. They're quick, do a beautiful job and the salon is bright, fresh and sparkling clean. It's kind of gross how many aren't!

How do you rate the quality and range of services in the Eastern Suburbs in terms of beauty?

If you're looking for top notch beauty treatments you are in the right place. You can get everything you need in this neck of the woods and you can rest easy knowing you're dealing with the best there is.

Are you noticing any new beauty trends coming in for summer?

We're still mad for that typical Australian beach girl look and this summer will be no different. In fact, if anything, it's going to be even more exaggerated. Think Elle Macpherson 80s era, golden goddess. Big hair, rich tans and long lean limbs.

What do you think is the most underrated treatment in the business?

I think that fillers can do amazing things in terms of changing face shape, providing you with more flattering features and generally holding back the clock. That said, you do need to select a practitioner carefully. You want someone who prefers a more natural, subtle look. I can't recommend Natalie Abouchar at Privee Clinic in Bondi Junction highly enough.

Why do you think it's important for women to make the effort (in their schedules and by dipping into their bank accounts) to enjoy a pampering session every now and then?

It's a cliche but women tend to put themselves last. They care for everyone around them; their kids, their co-workers, bosses, partners, friends and often forget they need some time out too. A beauty treatment can seem indulgent but it forces you to sit still and take a moment which may turn out to be the moment you really, really needed.

The other side of course is that when you look good, you feel good. It's simplistic yes, but it's true.
