Beautiful Ballina is the launching spot to the lush Northern Rivers region, but with so much on offer, there’s no reason to rush through this seaside town. Taking life in its stride, Ballina is the type of place that has city folk packing up their lives and making a move north.

There is a lot to love about Ballina – from its subtropical environment and stunning coastline to the sun-kissed village that runs along River Street. There’s also waterfront dining, markets (farmers and twilight), food festivals, and let’s not forget the oversized prawn that has long been a tourist attraction on Australia’s list of Big Things.

There’s also waterfront dining, markets (farmers and twilight), food festivals, and let’s not forget the oversized prawn that has long been a tourist attraction on Australia’s list of Big Things.

And although Ballina is well-equipped to meet the demands of the growing population with schools (four high schools and five primary schools to be exact), a laid-back village, shopping complexes, a hospital, and a domestic airport. When it comes down to it, Ballina’s biggest pull is its coastline – all 32-kilometre of it.

Surfing beaches, sheltered coves and golden sands are a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts. And what a choice they have. There are 26-kilometres of cycleway, horse riding, river cruises, fishing charters, surfing beaches, sea and river kayaking, mountain biking, hiking trails, and off-road 4WD tracks. Then there are the lush surrounds of Byron Bay’s hinterland and dramatic coastline, a short 30-minute drive away, that’s just begging to be explored.

Neighbours

Ballina’s winning location and lust for waterplay has put this beachside town on the well-worn tourist trail. In peak periods, Ballina’s holiday parks and many beaches are swarming with holiday-makers, but this does little to deter the throngs of growing families that are drawn to Ballina’s easy-going lifestyle year-round. And it’s not only families that call this neck of the woods home; Ballina also ranks highly among retirees.
