1. Natural fibers

Wicker, rattan, and jute — oh my! Last year, it was almost impossible to flick through an interiors magazine, or scroll through Pinterest and Instagram without seeing these types of natural fibers in the limelight. And here’s why: as our lives become more reliant on technology, the desire to surround ourselves with natural materials in an attempt to balance things out, has become increasingly important.

Luckily, since this organic trend is here to stay, introduce some natural furnishings and homewares in your own home – from eco-friendly stores such as  Papaya, Planet Furniture, and You, The Earth and Me.

2. Cool ceramics

Continuing the holistic homewares theme, artisan-made ceramics are also having a bit of a resurgence as of late, with pretty creations including everything from dinnerware to flower vases, all hand-crafted by an array of wonderful, local Australian creatives. Pottery became a big thing in 70s, and despite disappearing for a few decades, today, the likes of Tara Burke Ceramics  and Married To The Sea are proving that ceramics are no doubt, cool once again.

3. Living Coral

Every year, Pantone announces its highly-anticipated Colour of the Year, and for 2019, the shade of the moment is Living Coral. Pops of not-pink, not-orange will be making its mark on the interior scene, with many designers decorating in line with this harmonious hue. Bold, beautiful and most of all fun, this spritely shade can be worked into your design scheme as big or as subtle as you’d like. 4. Statement art

Wave goodbye to overdone gallery walls – rumour has it that oversized statement art will adorn our walls in 2019, instead. This trend will see large-scale works of art used to add both impact and interest to an otherwise blank canvas wall space. Admittedly, adopting this trend will likely come with a hefty price tag, but consider it an investment. We recommend scrolling through the incredible art collection young artist Bonnie Gray has on offer.

5. Linen bedding

Linen bedding has been cropping up everywhere, from boutique brands to chain stores – and it’s not hard to see why. This sleek style of bedlinen is a great way to add texture and comfort to any bedroom, plus, being a highly breathable material, it keeps you sleeping cool in summer and warm in winter. Brands such as Bed Threads, Sage & Clare and I Love Linen are getting mighty creative with their colour offerings, so you have the freedom to have a little fun with your bedroom space.

 6. Velvet furnishings

Once considered a tad dated and old-fashioned, now a dreamy décor essential, swathes of velvet have made a big comeback, and we can’t get enough. Luxurious and elegant, velvet instantly adds a sense of grandeur and glamour to any room. With its tactile qualities and luscious good looks, we predict velvet furnishings to be one of 2019’s most sought-after trends.

Sitchu tip:  introduce this look in the living room with either a velvet sofa or an armchair – try West Elm or Lounge Lovers to find the perfect style.

7. Concrete bathrooms

Functional, fun and fabulously stylish, concrete is fast-becoming the bathroom material of choice. Not only is it strong and versatile, it looks oh-so-good too, particularly if you’re a fan of the urban industrial look. From floors and ceilings to surfaces and showers, this stone-coloured finish – be it rough, smooth, polished or preened – is guaranteed to add drama to any bathroom space.

8. Tidy trend

If the Netflix show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo has taught us anything, it’s that most people lead busy lives. As a result, their homes can often become cluttered along the way. The KonMarie method has quickly gained cult status, proving that people are craving more organisation and structure in the home. So, this year, we can expect to see more and more clever storage solutions being used at home, along with the desire to lead a more minimalist life.

9. Bar carts

Bar carts made it big again in 2018, and thankfully it’s looking like we won’t be wheeling this trend out any time soon. For those who like to entertain and mix up the odd cocktail or two, a bar cart is somewhat a necessity to the home. They’ve come a long way over the years, almost doubling as works of art in their own right. Take a look at our gorgeous round-up of on-trend bar carts for your next boozy gathering.

10. Indoor plants

The past few years have seen an increasing rise in the popularity of indoor plants.  Surrounding yourself with fresh foliage not only helps to promote productivity and creativity, but it's also good for your mental health – partly due to the rewarding feeling you get when you’re able to nurture happy and healthy plants. And of course, it goes without saying that they also make our homes look all the more beautiful – this natural trend will only continue to flourish in the New Year, and beyond.

11. Sustainable living

There’s been a sizeable shift in attitudes towards sustainable living. Veganism, vegetarianism, zero-waste, fair trade, organic – there are plenty of eco-friendly options when it comes to ethical eating, but it’s starting to filter down into the home sphere too. People want to know the story behind what they’re purchasing, and what they stand for.

So, for 2019, eco-friendly homewares are where it’s at. Sustainable fabrics, recycled materials and animal-free alternatives are set to soar into the spotlight, as are locally made products from small suppliers and designers, all of which are made using timeless materials and that are friendly on the environment. 12. Primary hues

From soft pastels to exotic jewels, the last few years have welcomed the full colour spectrum into our homes. 2019 however hints at paring things back, with bright, bold primary shades taking centre stage on the interior scene. Look forward to deep, rusty-coloured reds, bright indigo blues and retro mustard yellows, as the colour charts take a step back with a more simple, minimalist approach.

13. Personal touch

All trends aside, your home is your canvas, so you can choose to tell whatever story suits your own individual style. Whether it’s a personal collection of items, framed photographs of loved ones, or colours and textures that evoke fond memories, trust yourself and enjoy the space you create.
