Cosy up in Front of the Big Screen: Sydney’s Outdoor Cinemas

It’s that time of year again when outdoor cinemas start popping up all over Sydney. Pack a picnic and some comfy pillows and settle in for an evening in front of the big screen. Whether it’s Bondi or North Sydney, there’s a cinema close by, leaving you with no excuse to miss cult favourites, arthouse films and this year’s biggest blockbuster.

Skyline Drive-In Cinema

For a bit of nostalgia, Skyline Drive-In Cinema endures all four seasons but it shines brightest in summer. Part of Event Cinemas, the venue is always running the latest new releases, so Western Sydney’s film buffs know where to venture on balmy nights. Grab your friends, snacks and vehicle – ideally with a large boot that allows you to spread out in.

St. George OpenAir Cinema

There is nothing better than watching a movie with Sydney Harbour as the backdrop. Thankfully St. George OpenAir Cinema is back again this summer bringing the best oldies and newbies on the film front harbourside. The classiest of cinematic experiences, OpenAir kicks off in January 2018, be sure to get in quick when tickets go on sale as session times sell out fast.

Moonlight Cinema

Kicking off on the first day of summer, Moonlight Cinema will be back in full force until April 1. Picnic-lovers, wine-lovers and movie buffs unite annually in Centennial Park for films beneath the stars. A casual affair, bring your own basket of goodies, picnic blanket and even a bottle of wine. (Yes, BYO wine!) Otherwise get in early, snap up a beanbag and order movie snacks from the food trucks. Heaven.

AMEX OpenAir Cinema

When you pair Bondi Beach with live music and an outdoor cinematic experience, you know you’re onto a good thing. Sitting comfortably on their bean bags, everyone’s attention shifts from the rolling waves to the big screen. While here, take advantage of the food and fully licensed bar, but you could make a full date night of it and drop into one of Bondi’s many restaurants pre- or post-movie.

Sydney Hills Outdoor Cinema

A white picket fence lines this outdoor gem in Castle Hill, which will be running classics and new releases between January 11 and February 18. Those visiting for a special occasion should seriously consider a VIP Bell Tent. Set at about $300 per tent, this intimate option fits eight people and includes a private butler fetching any food and drink you order. #winning

Sunset Cinema

On the northside of the bridge, when the sun begins to dip, North Sydney Oval transforms into pop-up cinema. Starting January 18 and concluding on March 24, cinema’s cult classics and biggest blockbusters will be lighting up the night. Line-up is yet to be announced but you can get tickets from November 24.

Back to Bondi. Support the film industry’s Flickerfest which is housed at Bondi Pavillion between January 12 to 21. Catch the best of short films on the edge of Bondi Beach, as this international film festival celebrates local and international filmmakers. We couldn’t think of a more iconic venue, or post-swim stop off. Entries have closed but tickets are yet to go on sale. Sign up to their site to stay in the loop.
