Along with offering an authentic experience, these on-site cooking classes are run by the very same chefs that whip up that day’s breakfast/lunch/dinner service, so you not only get a peek into how your favourite restaurant works, but you also score the recipes for those delectable dishes you order time and time again.

The Bondi Junction location hosts a bunch of hands-on classes, so you can learn all about making your own mozzarella, sausages, pizza, focaccia and pasta. The Italian mecca also tailors classes for special occasions, such as Mothers Day.

Hop in the car and cruise to the Southern Highlands, where this fine dining venue hosts ‘Gather & Cook Adventures.’ After arriving at 9am, you’ll sip on coffee before spending the morning with Biota’s chefs, gathering the freshest of produce from the region. You’ll then cook up your ingredients by a campfire, and return to Biota by the early afternoon. Held monthly, the workshops are wildly popular so try to book in advance.

In Surry Hills, Pasta Emilia is famous for its shelves heaving with fresh, organic and biodynamic pasta. Next door at Osteria Emilia, the delightful trattoria, you can learn the insider secrets to creating the perfect Italian meal. You’ll work in teams – with a glass of wine in hand, of course – to whip up handmade pasta (including a gluten-free version), gnocchi and sauces.

Italian-born and –bred Annalisa Ferrari is the brainchild behind this new eatery, which is a café, bakery, and pizzeria rolled into one. From Wednesday to Saturday, Ferrari hosts Tuscan cooking classes in the evenings. You’ll learn how to make classic dishes using seasonal ingredients, all while socialising. If you’re craving something specific, she’s open to curating cooking classes for groups, too.

Everyone’s favourite Italian local, Fratelli Fresh, passes on the secrets to its success through its pizza masterclasses. Held on the first Saturday of the month, the two-hour class will teach you how to make Napoli-style dough, and then stretch it, toss it, top it and bake it to perfection. You’ll get to tuck into your pizza fresh from the oven and take a ball of dough home.

Nestled in Cremorne, Nilgiri’s is known for its dynamic Indian food, which is cooked in a theatrical open kitchen. But if you sign up for a class, you’ll discover that the true delight is the charismatic owner, Ajoy. On Saturdays, he leads eager students through classes in the art of Indian cuisine, and the theme changes monthly.

This Thai restaurant is packed to the rafters every night, and it only takes one meal to discover why. Chef and co-owner Sujet Saenkham grows most of the ingredients at his farm in the Kangaroo Valley, so every plate is as fresh as it gets. A few times a year, he holds small classes at the Surry Hills location, and walks students through making traditional Thai dishes.

For decades now, Harvest has been dishing up inventive vegetarian and vegan food. The down-to-earth eatery also runs cooking classes on Sunday mornings. Led by Chef Adam de Ath, you’ll learn how to whip up your own plates of green goodness, and then sit down to a three-course lunch with your fellow students. The classes are intimate with a maximum of six people.
