Sydney's Best Date Nights with a Twist

Whether you’ve been dating for two weeks or two decades, finding a romantic destination to impress your date as well as yourself can get tricky. If relationships have taught us anything its compromise, and sometimes that requires surprising your partner with an axe-throwing session (okay, maybe not for everyone). Whether it’s their birthday, an anniversary or your weekly date night, here are some ways to shake it up. There’s everything from high octane dates to quiet city escapes for the more sensitive (or exhausted) soul.

Comedy Night

For a couple keen to have a laugh on date night, opt out of dinner and in for comedy night at Della Hyde. Featuring some of Australia's funniest comedians, this basement bar is transformed into a laugh-fest. Tickets are available online or at the door, and you don't have to go hungry with their snack and show package. Next show is 20th February so be sure to lock it in!

Della Hyde: 34 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst

To spice up your next date, head to Establishment on a Tuesday night for their Latin music and salsa night. Join DJ Willie Sabor as you dance the night away to the sexy Latin beats and learn how to Salsa. Lessons start from 8pm and be sure to stay hydrated with their $12 mojitos.

Boozy Bowling

Instead of grabbing a nightcap, book in a bowl after dinner. The Standard Bowl in Darlinghurst sits above the iconic Kinselas and has that old school American arcade feel with a three-lane bowling alley. Grab a couple of drinks and enjoy a bowl as a duo. The alley sits beside the main stage, so catch a gig after a boozy bowling session. No way boredom can strike here.

Axe Throwing

This is the kind of date to let off some steam and enjoy a bit of romantic rivalry. Introducing Maniax, a venue dedicated to axe throwing. Get into some healthy competition throwing axes at wooden targets, and discover who has the greatest combination of strength and agility. Post axe throwing, discover the endless dining options at Precinct 75.

Maniax: Precinct 75, 75 Mary Street, St Peters

Wine Appreciation

Wine usually comes with tasting notes, so there’s no better way to get educated than with a lesson at the Sydney Wine Centre. Offering regular events and tastings since 2009, look out for their next cheese and wine pairing event or sign up for their one-day wine appreciation course. Finishing up in the late afternoon, you will be able to head straight to dinner with your new wine knowledge.

For a date night to harness your inner Picasso, Cork & Chroma combine painting and wine to create a fabulous night out. The step-by-step instructions and guidance will have even the most uncreative people walking away with a completed masterpiece by the end of the night. The best part is that you can BYO booze and drink it throughout the lesson.

Cork & Chroma: 55 Holt Street, Surry Hills

Escape Room

For an out-of-the-box date night, book an Escape room experience. The general idea is that you are locked in a room and fed clues so you can get out. The Paniq Room  in The Rocks has three themes, Sen3es, Military Bunker and Supercell 117, and Newtown's The Cipher Room has different scenarios that require you to solve a mystery. A perfect date for crime show lovers and puzzle solvers.

Cooking School

To make your next date night a home-cooked feast, head to Bondi Junction's Salt Meats Cheese for a lesson in Italian cooking. The Bondi Junction location hosts a bunch of hands-on classes, so you can learn all about making your own mozzarella, sausages, pizza, focaccia and pasta.
