Sydney’s Most Romantic Bars for Date Night

Sydney is bursting with beautiful bars, but there’s an art to picking an amorous spot for date night. At the very least, it should be intimate and softly-lit, with a quiet booth or hidden corner to cosy up in, away from the crowds. But to ensure your date is a complete success, we’ve sifted through 13 of the best wine and cocktail haunts where the service is smooth, the wine list is impressive, and the menu is made for sharing.

When it’s time to turn up the heat, these are the only bars to book for date night.

Big Poppas

For couples who love hip-hop and RnB, then Big Poppa’s is for you. Venture down the narrow staircase and you’ll find yourself in a cosy, candle-lit room with soft leather booths and dark timber tables. Devour gourmet cheese and charcuterie over a bottle of wine and an old-school ‘90s soundtrack. Heading there on the weekend? Hit the dance floor with your date, and the two of you can bump and grind well into the night.

96 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst

Eau De Vie

Well-hidden at the back of the Kirketon Hotel, this secret speakeasy will whisk you back in time to the roaring ‘20s. Settle into a leather booth, soak up the smooth jazz soundtrack, and work your way through the deliciously moreish cocktail list, while you get to know each other intimately. If you really like your date, you can ask your waiter to crack open the ‘personal drinks cabinet,’ which houses the bar’s priciest drops.

229 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst

Sitchu tip:  In Potts Point,The Roosevelt  is a moody cocktail bar run by the same team behind Eau De Vie.  It screams romance and 1950s New York glamour, and the drinks are named after musical icons.

Wyno

Hidden down a laneway in Surry Hills, Wyno is a wonderful – and wildly popular – wine bar, so you’ll want to arrive early to secure a seat. It’s owned by the Porteno boys, so you can expect the same sort of chilled-out vibe and playful menu, plus a bigger wine menu. Post-date, you can pop into the wine store at the back and buy the bottle you shared as a memento.

Wine Library

This Woollahra watering hole is a well-oiled machine – and a date night dream. It has a chic yet laidback vibe, and you can choose between the front bar with its warm lighting and low-hanging lamps, the dining room or the courtyard, which is beautiful on a balmy night. As you may have guessed, it’s all about the wine here, though the snack menu is great too.

18 Oxford Street, Woollahra

Since I Left You

If you have a feeling drinks might turn into dinner, head to this small bar in the CBD. When you get there, go straight to the lush, leafy courtyard – an urban oasis surrounded by towering city skyscrapers. As the fairy lights twinkle, sip on creative cocktails, listen to live music, and nosh on the bar’s famously good finger food. Oh hello, romance!

338 Kent Street, Sydney

Charlie Parker’s

Foodies love Fred’s in Paddington. For a romantic night, start with a drink (and a cheeky cheese board) in the speakeasy-style bar downstairs. With dim lighting, dark woods and luxe leathers, Charlie Parker’s is as cosy as it is charming. The bartenders are at the top of their game, and will mix up any concoction you want, even if it’s not on the menu.

380 Oxford Street, Paddington

Hacienda

Sitting on the harbourfront, Hacienda is an effortless date night win. Step inside, and the bar is beautiful. Inspired by Cuban architecture and the vintage hotels of 1950 Miami, there are plants and pastels aplenty to match the quirky tropical-themed cocktails. To score top points, time your visit with sunset, so the two of you can watch the sun dip behind the Harbour Bridge.

61 Macquarie Street, Sydney

Kitty Hawk

This fabulous French-inspired bar comes decked out in luxe leather booths and intimate tables decorated by candlelight. Cocktails are military themed, with a quirky ‘airplane manual’ menu that’s filled deliciously inventive creations. Food is decadent and traditional, with Parisian delights courtesy of formally trained pastry chef Jason Wright. Dig into the likes of rock oysters, steak tartare and strawberry mille-fueille à deux.

16 Phillip Lane, Sydney

Love, Tilly Devine

Wine and romance go hand in hand at Love, Tilly Devine. Tucked away in a Darlinghurst alley, this intimate bar (named after the famous 1930s brothel Madame) is a great place to come for a good conversation and a glass of wine. There are over 300 varieties on offer, so if you’re a bit of a wine buff then this is the place to show off your skills.

91 Crown Lane, Darlinghurst

10 William St

Tucked away in a Paddington terrace, this bar ticks all the boxes for romance: it’s small (make a reservation!), dimly-lit and chic, and has a wine list that doubles up as a conversation starter. Order a bottle of red or sip on something new (like orange wine) and then swap stories over a few share plates. Leave space for the fabulously fluffy tiramisu. The ultimate date night dessert.

10 William Street, Paddington

Dear Sainte Eloise

This Potts Point wine bar has the date night brief down to a tee. The shelves are lined with 400 bottles of wine from around the world, and there’s a sommelier on hand to help you choose a delicious drop. The best bit? It serves small share plates until 11.30pm, just in case you get carried away with conversation…

Shop 5, 29 Orwell Street, Potts Point

Sitchu tip: In Darlinghurst, its sister bar Love, Tilly Devine also knows how to turn up the heat.

Manly Wine

Over the bridge, Manly Wine isn’t the most obvious choice for a romantic date, but there’s something special about watching the waves roll in on the beach while sipping on vino. Above all, this beachside spot is a wine bar, and the wine list is organised by taste. All that’s left to do is pop the question… Do you want a ‘big, bold red’ or a ‘crisp, chilled white’?

8-13 South Steyne, Manly

Grandma’s Bar

Don’t let the name fool you. This nanna is oh-so-cool! An inner-city cocktail den designed to feel just like grandma’s: a kitsch, cosy spot where you can relax and indulge in good food and drinks. And it’s nailed the vibe. Bring your date here for tropical cocktails (the menu is very rum-heavy) and incredible, cheesy jaffles.
