Eclectic Eats: The Redfern Café Edit

A testament to all that is old and new, Redfern's diverse café scene is guaranteed to hit the spot. From nostalgia-filled 1950s diners to trendy organic tea bars, these are the Redfern cafés crying out for your attention.

Breadfern Bakery

A shrine to all things bread, Breadfern is run by the team behind Tapeo, Redfern’s beloved gluten-free bakery. Breadfern’s products, however, are quite the opposite. Pies, pastries, and five types of bread are on the menu at this carb-loaded café. Everything is made fresh daily.

Three Williams

Perched on the city fringe, Three Williams is one of Redfern’s much-loved cafés – and for good reason. The team whips up an impressive all-day menu, and is famous among foodies for its inventive twists on breakfast classics. When the clock strikes 12, feel free to order a bevvy, the café is licensed.

Milk Bar by Cafe Ish

Serving up heavy dose of nostalgia, along with burgers, all-day breakfast, milkshakes and Instagrammable ‘supershakes’, Milk Bar by Café Ish is a must for any brunch goer. Walking into the café is like stepping back in time to the 1950s, complete with a jukebox, old-school arcade games, and jars of mixed lollies scattered atop the counter. The prices fit the theme, too.

The Rabbit Hole

Sydney’s first organic tea bar that is as cosy and whimsical as you’d imagine. The Rabbit Hole Organic Tea Bar has reinvented the drink for a new generation, offering a range of classic brews, tea lattes, tea sodas and over 20 original tea blends. They also have a limited selection of sweet and savoury tea-inspired food.

Oratnek

When former Bills head chef Kenny Takayama ventured out on his own, we knew it was going to be good – and Café Oratnek has lived up to expectations. This Redfern eatery is cosy and creative, and they’re known for their Asian-inspired brunch. Our pick: Their white chocolate matcha fondue! We can't think of anything better than dipping fruit and marshmellows into this plate of pure deliciousness.
