Known for so much more than its glitzy Star City Casino (although Sokyo Lounge in the Star does get an honorable mention), Pyrmont's former industrial hub is home to an eclectic mix of slick watering holes and trendy new cocktail dens, serving up some of the best tipples around. Stylish new hangouts grace the roofs of old English pubs, whilst cosy wine bars have set up camp in historic circa 1700’s buildings. Here's our pick of the best bars in the Pyrmont precinct, fit for a Sunday sesh, date night or after-work drinks.
Pyrmont’s Quarryman’s Hotel caught our attention with its refresh last year, and now we have another reason to visit. The Rooftop is now open for business, and it’s a beauty. Inspired by Palm Springs, it’s all pastels, timber floors, plush furnishings and lush greenery, plus a cacti garden on each table (naturally). The cocktail list is excellent, too. We like the Palma Rosa, a mix of tequila blanco, rose, ruby grapefruit juice and ginger syrup.
Opening in 1841 and last in operation in the 1980’s, Terminus Hotel is one of Pyrmont’s historic watering holes. Retaining much of its original features, with some modern upgrades, the public bar pours the local’s favourite craft beers. The menu has been crafted by celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge and the revamped cocktail lounge brings a luxe vibe. For Sunday sundowners, the courtyard is the place to be.
Reflective of Pyrmont’s laid-back yet hospitable attitude, this is a venue that just keeps on giving. By day, Bar Zini is a café that dishes up breakfast staples and great coffee. By night, they transform into a wine bar-slash-restaurant with a menu inspired by classic Italian dishes.
There is more to Sokyo than delicious, award-winning food. Sokyo Lounge thoughtfully pairs expertly crafted cocktails with their delicate Japanese menu. The cocktail menu plays on traditional, seasonal flavours with added Japanese flair, but their speciality is Japanese whiskey, beer and sake.
Set in a historic 1800’s building in the middle of Pyrmont, Gallon is a local wine bar that exudes character – from the rustic chic interiors to the courtyard garden. They have an impressive wine list that pairs nicely with the gourmet pizza and share plates.
