If you see a line of people at lunch time waiting patiently outside what appears to be a hole in the wall on Illawarra Road, then you will have witnessed the phenomenon that is Marrickville Pork Roll. Serving up the traditional roll with a few small variations this joint doesn’t waste time on fancy ingredients or presentation, they stick to classic flavours that pack a punch and come in a white paper bag. Get there well before lunch time to skip the line or be prepared to wait. The traditional roll will only set you back $5.00 but will keep you nice and full for hours.

Yen for Viet

The first restaurant opened by Alexandria’s famed Nguyen Brothers, Yen for Viet is where you will find fresh flavours, succulent meats and traditional Vietnamese dishes done well. A chain restaurant scattered around all parts of Western Sydney, Bau Truong is a delight when it comes to curating authentic Vietnamese street food. The Marrickville branch is slightly more upmarket with prices reflecting that however the inventive and varying menu means that there is something there for everyone. Enjoy the elegant décor and try their delicious Pork Belly with Shrimp Paste.

A Marrickville staple, the Bay Tinh has been around for over 30 years and is a much loved local haunt. Hello Auntie 

King of the BBQ, Hello Auntie serves traditional Vietnamese street food in a modern context and with an emphasis on deliciously barbequed meats. This family run restaurant is the brain child of chef Cuong Nguyen formerly of Edamame and his mother who both decided to nail the staples of banh xeo (crispy pancakes), banh khot (Vietnamese pikelets), pho and DIY rice paper rolls. The results are deliciously simple and incredibly addictive.

PHD Vietnamese Restaurant
