The Best Fine Dining in Sydney’s Inner West

Fine dining experiences in Sydney aren’t limited to the CBD, and Sydney’s inner west now has a smorgasbord of venues on offer. Whether it’s oysters overlooking the harbour, a lunchtime degustation or a few home comforts with a masterful touch, there’s a restaurant to cater to your indulgent needs here.

The Boathouse on Blackwattle

Sitting pretty on Blackwattle Bay is The Boathouse, which offers panoramic views of the Anzac Bridge and more than a dozen different varieties of oysters. With an a la carte menu on offer, the dishes and view oozes a fine dining feel. The produce is seasonal and the menu changes daily, except for their famous snapper pie.

123 Ferry Road, Glebe

Glebe Point Diner

The epitome of comfort food with a masterful touch. This bistro style restaurant does all those home favourites well, from scotch fillets with fried onions to duck liver pate with fig jam. The fit out is chic with a dose of hipster. Indulge in a long lunch outside or a cosy dinner in the warmth, regardless, order the sharing menu and finish with the burnt pav.

407 Glebe Point Road, Glebe

Mantecato

A restaurant dedicated to al dente risotto, Mantecato is home to exceptional pasta. This chic venue has touches of warmth, including a feature wall covered in Italian newspapers. An extensive wine list is dominated by Italian drops (of course), and don’t miss one of the four risottos or the consistent crowd pleaser – a Tagliatelle al ragu of beef and pork.

129/85 Reynolds Street, Balmain

Ester

A destination restaurant for foodies, Ester’s menu offers a communal fine dining experience with share plates at its heart. The intimate venue has a minimalist touch, while the dishes are seafood and meat heavy. Creations like cauliflower, almond and mint accompany sommerlad chicken breast with garlic bread sauce. Date nights are done well here.

46/52 Meagher Street, Chippendale

Automata

The fanciest of fine dining establishments along Kensington Street, Automata, in the Old Clare Hotel, offers a five-course menu, which is constantly evolving. The European-inspired dishes are built on local, seasonal produce which encourages constant innovation in the kitchen. The restaurant’s fit out is industrial and minimalist, leaving experimentation and colour for your plate.

5 Kensington Street, Chippendale

Sixpenny

Housed in a corner terrace near Stanmore station, Sixpenny oozes elegant dining with a cosy venue and innovative dishes. The everchanging menu plays on seasonal produce, which keeps diners constantly intrigued. Enjoy masterful creations like potatoes with oyster and raw mushroom or lamb rump with leek and caramelised pumpkin juice.

83 Percival Road, Stanmore

One Penny Red

What was once a post office is now contemporary European dining at its best. The bright and airy venue is the backdrop to a menu that is dominated by seafood and meat-heavy share plates. The ‘Trust the Chef’ banquet features their signature dishes. Think roast tiger prawns, lamb shoulder and banana salted caramel beignet.

2 Moonbie Street, Summer Hill

3 Weeds Restaurant

One of Sydney’s first gastropubs, 3 Weeds has taken pub food to a whole other level. Housed inside a local watering hole, the award-winning restaurant does affordable fine dining well. Open Wednesday to Saturday it’s always heaving, but if you miss out, classic pub meals are at the back bar every day of the week.

197 Evans Street, Rozelle

Oscillate Wildly

A bistro-style restaurant serving a seasonal eight course degustation menu. The dishes are always sustainable and constantly evolving with each dish named by its key ingredients (‘Foie, Cauliflower, Maple’) so their arrival on the table brings some surprise. The bright, contemporary space only seats 30 in the main dining room so it’s well worth booking weeks in advance.
