Citrus Goodness: Sydney’s Yuzu Inspired Dishes
This fascinating little fruit is a mainstay in Japanese cuisine, bringing a citrusy little kick to dishes without ever being too tart or too sweet. Forever trawling the menu for dishes boasting Yuzu, we’ve compiled some of our favourite places to get our next fix.
Here, the Yuzu special roll brings out the Yuzu’s citrus notes, and we’d be fooling ourselves if we didn’t admit to munching on their spicy BBQ wagyu and the sugarsnap tempura. With a sister restaurant called YUZU Pyrmont, city slickers can also get their fix of scrumptious Japanese during their lunch break!

If you’re lucky enough to get a seat during their lunch service, the yuzu scallop ramen with prawn and john dory wonton is a must-try. Their à la carte offering also boasts yuzu jam to accompany a delectable serve of foie gras with miso eggplant, and the wagyu jerky with yuzu aioli is a definite crowd pleaser.

Toriciya’s impressive sake and shochu offering is a major draw card and pairs effortlessly with their comprehensive menu. The kingfish and jalapeno carpaccio drizzled with yuzu soy sauce melts in the mouth, while the kaori oven baked savoy cabbage with truffle oil sauce adds some crunch to your entrées. Be sure to try the green tea brulée, it’s utterly luxurious.
18 Cammeray Road, Cammeray
Ever since he inspired sweet tooths everwhere on MasterChef, Reynold Poernomo has been busy building a sugary empire. For a delectable yuzu dessert, go to one of his Indonesian-inspired dessert bars and get the bright green ‘Mango.’ Made up of mango, yuzu ganache, almond gel, lemon curd, short bread and lemon dust, it’s summer in a pastry.
Chippendale and Ryde
China Diner’s Yuzu Spritz combines Aperol, Yuzu Sake, ruby grapefruit and prosecco for a bubbly infusion, while the Blushing Rose includes Beefeater gin, Aperol, Yuzu Sake and rosé for an eminently fresh, summery drink. The Smashed ‘pav’ with green tea, yuzu curd and rhubarb is the only way to complete your meal.
Bondi and Double Bay
Kings of Japanese fusion, Café Kentaro’s karaage sambo is legendary among locals, while the oro-shiso beef hamburg steak with grated daikon, shiso, ponzu gelée, shimeji and Japanese potato salad will sate even the most ravenous diner. Opt in to their hot yuzu lemonade for a perfectly balanced sweet-sour refreshment.

Daniel San’s almost cult-like status is more than warranted. They have a wide range of international beers and an impressive deck where you can chow down on fresh rolls, poke bowls and pork buns until the cows come home. We’ll be rounding out our meal with the Earl Grey Panna Cotta, drizzled with yuzu granita and raspberry jelly.

Bar Ume’s chicken katsu burger is what we’re all about. Bringing hand crumbed chicken katsu, shredded cabbage, onion, tonkatsu sauce and of course, yuzu kosho mayo, together for the burger of your dreams. Add a side of the renkon chips with seaweed salt and wash it all down with the Yuzu and brown sugar house soda.

This immensely chic small bar in Surry Hills brings you all things Japanese whiskey, cocktails, sake, wine and yakitori. Sounds like our kind of place. Luring us out of our summer diets, the yuzu glaze coating the negima chicken thigh and shallot yakitori beckons, as does the yuzu honey sauce drizzled over the tonton pork belly kushiyaki.
