Buon Appetito: 8 of the Best Italian Eateries in Bondi

To tuck into woodfired pizzas, pastas and delectable Italian dishes, make your way to Bondi. The seaside suburb has plenty of options, from paper plate pizza shops all the way to stylish, sit-down spots with the wine lists to match. Book a table, settle in and sip on a glass (or bottle) of vino. Buon appetito!

Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta

For the best Napolitano pizzas and Aperol spritzes this side of the bridge, go to Da Orazio. Led by restauranteur Maurice Terzini (from Bondi Icebergs) and chef Orazio D’Elio (ex Popolo), this venue is as warehouse-chic as it is authentic. It’s laidback, and the waiters busily bop between tables, stopping to chat with patrons in between. Pizza aside, the focaccia con porchetta is something special.

La Piadina

When you find yourself in Bondi for lunch, La Piadina is the place to go. Owned by two Italian brothers, the hole-in-a-wall is a local institution. It serves up excellent coffee and piadinas, a type of flatbread that’s scorched and stuffed with a range of fillings. Think of it as a lighter take on pizza. There’s also a marketplace next door, where you can pick up imported goodies like olive oils.

A Tavola

This is A Tavola’s second outpost, and it’s just as good as the Darlinghurst original. The pasta is made fresh daily, and the menu features a simple selection of starters, entrees and salads, as well as weekly specials, many of which focus on fresh, sustainable seafood. Pair your meal with an Italian wine and save room for dessert – the cremino al cioccolato is our pick.

Pasticceria Papa

Italians are all about savouring the finer things in life, which is why no meal is complete without dessert. That’s where Pasticceria Papa comes in. The iconic bakery is famous for its ricotta cheesecakes, Ferrero Rocher mousse, gelato and cannoli, and is a must-stop on any foodie tour of Bondi. The coffee is amazing, too, so sit down and stay a while.

Bondi Trattoria

After getting a swish makeover, ‘The Tratt’ is run by Joe Pavlovich, Luke Mangan’s former right-hand man. Set right on the beach, the relaxed restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and boasts an outdoor terrace. The pasta and pizza is made in-house daily, and much of the menu is designed to share. If you’re stuck, opt for the herb-roasted spitchcock with carrot, yoghurt and pistachio.

Society Pizzeria di Catania

It may be a tiny shopfront, but Society Pizzeria is packed to the rafters every night – and for good reason. The pizzaiolos have mastered the art of the Sicilian woodfired pizza, and they also offer gluten-free and activated charcoal dough (it’s Bondi, after all). On Mondays and Tuesdays, there’s all-you-can-eat for $20, making the start of the week a little sweeter.

The Corner House

On date night, stroll to The Corner House – a restaurant-slash-bar that dishes up seasonal Italian fare and woodfired pizzas. There are two areas to choose from: the dining room is a little fancier, while the upstairs bar serves up pizzas (try the Daniela – it’s delicious), as well as charcuterie and cheese boards. Arrive between 5-7pm, and you’ll score cheap cocktails, beer and wine for happy hour.

281 Bondi Road, Bondi

Gelbison Pizzeria Ristorante Italiano

Family-run and friendly, this neighbourhood haunt has been on a staple on the Bondi dining scene for over 25 years. It cooks up classic pizzas, pastas, risottos and mains that are bursting with flavour, along with an incredible tiramisu. Perfect for large gatherings as much as date nights, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel at home as soon as you walk in.
