Wander to West Juliett on the weekend, and you’ll find a line out the door. Don’t worry – it moves quickly, and the wait is worth it. The menu features Mediterranean dishes made up of market produce. If you’re a savoury fan, get the haloumi egg roll with wilted greens and chilli marmalade aoili, or the spelt pumpkin bread. For a sweeter start to the day, order the French toast with strawberries and salted caramel.

Over in Erskineville, this café burst onto the scene a couple of years ago with its mega-milkshakes. Fast-forward to now, and its hearty, all-day breakfast menu has made it a popular local haunt. There are plenty of healthy options, such as the green bowl with peas, kale, avocado, black rice and boiled eggs, as well as more indulgent breakfasts like the Belgium waffles topped with banana, strawberries, macadamia brittle and Nutella.

Ramen for breakfast? Why not! This motorbike workshop-slash-café in Newtown specialises in the stuff, and it’s buzzing every day of the week. In the mornings, it serves up a ‘breakfast ramen’ of buttered toast broth, bacon, egg and tomato, as well as classic dishes with a twist. There’s the Bangkok bacon and eggs (a fried egg with pork belly, chilli, greens and a rice cake), as well as milk buns stuffed with egg, cheese and kimchee slaw.
1C Whateley Street, Newtown
This cosy café is more than just its punny name – it also serves up a seriously good breakfast. The team makes its yoghurts, preserves and condiments in house, so the modern Australian menu is as fresh as it gets. Love oats? Try Fleetwood Macchiato’s version, topped with semi-dried raspberries, lemon myrtle yoghut and macadamias. Otherwise, order the avocado, mint, parsley, smoked chipotle and nori on toast, and wash it down with a Single Origin coffee.

What will it be: blackberry crumpets with apple and rhubarb compote, sweet pickled apple and candied pistachio? Or perhaps the smashed avo with goat’s fetta, zucchini, kale, pomegranate, fried chickpeas and za’atar? At this Marrickville hotspot, almost everything on the menu is made from scratch, and if it isn’t, it’s sourced from local growers. A sustainability star, the breakfasts at Cornersmith are fresh and flavoursome. The menu changes all the time according to what’s in season, but you can expect a range of savoury and sweet plates, many of which are garnished with pickles from the café’s picklery or honey from its rooftop beehive. Our favourite is the Scondo Breakfast – a bowl of boiled eggs, cultured butter, cheddar, pear and a pot of apple and quince jam that pairs well with a Mecca coffee.
Annandale and Marrickville
In Ashfield, this corner café attracts foodies from all over. ‘Excelsior’ means ‘ever upward’ in Latin, and every breakfast here is better than the last. Try the house-cured salmon hash with shallots, fried buckwheat, poached egg and a sprinkling of fresh herbs, or the bacon and egg roll with capsicum relish. For a little crunch, get the housemade granola with roasted seeds, nuts and creamy yoghurt. While you’re eating, sip on the Butterscotch Malted Milkshake.

Ask any Annandale local for their go-to brekkie spot, and chances are they’ll say Revolver. A neighbourhood gem, this café – located in a restored 1890s corner store – uses free-range, locally-sourced produce. The result is a menu full of moreish, comforting classics, such as cinnamon chia porridge with stewed rhubarb, eggs benedict, and a house ocean trout rosti with baby spinach and avocado. And if you have dietary requirements, the chefs will happily accommodate them.
