Ah Tequila! The Best Mexican Restaurants in the Eastern Suburbs

Whether you’re in serious need of a fish taco, want to get your guac-on or couldn’t possibly go on living without a spicy margarita, the Eastern Suburbs has plenty of places to hit up when your Mexican cravings get too much to handle. Here are our top picks!

Through their bright, Day of the Dead themed décor, Roca Mexican Cantina brings authentic, Mexican culture and cuisine to the streets of Coogee. From the hand-rolled crispy taquitos and spicy chicken tacos to the fajitas and chicken alambre, every dish is a winner. For the drinks, go straight to their margarita selection. Corona topped margaritas anyone?

Beach Burrito

With chilled out vibes and interiors that nod to their beachy locale, Beach Burrito is the Mexican go-to East side of the city. The dishes at this casual eatery are brimming with fresh, filling food, and they have deals every day of the week – think happy hours with cheap margaritas and Taco Tuesdays – keep an eye on their website for special deals.

Bondi and Coogee

El Topo

Bringing the Mexican fiesta to the roof of Bondi Junction’s The Eastern. El Topo is a contemporary take on Oaxacan cuisine with a drool-worthy share menu – the jalapeno poppers and roast crickets is an absolute must try. Feeling hungry? The adobo lamb rump and suckling pig will hit the spot. To pair, choose from 100 Mexican white spirits and an international offering of wines.

Westfield Bondi Junction, 3/500 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction

For a refined yet authentic Mexican experience, head straight to Chula. Residing in the old Hugo’s Pizza site, this upscale restaurant delivers Oaxacan street-food dishes in an elegant way. Once seated start your night right and pick from the ‘Aguachile’ (Mexican ceviche) section. From there the baja tacos, pork belly carnitas and short rob birria are the natural next step. Save room for dessert and plenty of cocktails.

33 Bayswater Road, Potts Point

Operating under the premise of ‘mi casa su casa’, Fonda invites you in for a homely yet chic dining experience. With their pastel game strong, the beautiful interiors are reflected in their fresh and vibrant menu. Think chargrill corn, Mexican salmon poke, and chopped beef burritos. Equally as impressive is the inventive margarita menu featuring fraperol (frozen aperol), jalapeno kombucha, and hibiscus.

85 Hall Street, Bondi Beach

Delivering on fresh, contemporary and creative cuisine, TAQIZA is passionate about their Mexican food.  The sleek interiors are complimented by the refined menu. The food is inventive, from goat tacos to Oaxaca cheese fondue. In terms of drinks, there is a healthy selection of tequila, mezcal, wild agave and sotol to keep you hydrated.

Shop 3, 177/179 Glenayr Avenue, Bondi Beach

Located at The Spot in Randwick, Poco’s is a vibrantly kitsch Tex-Mex restaurant. With indoor/outdoor seating and hand-made Mexican décor adorning the walls, the atmosphere is lively and fun. Be sure to check the specials board on arrival but you can’t go past classics like the chimichanga, quesadilla or enchiladas.
