10 of the Best: Sydney’s Best Pies
The humble pie is more than just an Aussie icon – it’s the ultimate comfort food. While the hearty meat pie is a good go-to, pie shops are getting more creative, coming up with gourmet combinations that hit the spot every single time.
To tuck into a next-level pie, make your way to one of these pie spots.
Harry’s Café de Wheels
There’s no food cart more famous than Harry’s. For over 70 years, it’s been putting smiles on the faces of hungry patrons thanks to its generous pies and late night hours (til 4am on Fridays and Saturdays). It’s a must-stop on Sydney’s street food scene. When you arrive, try the signature ‘Tiger’ – a chunky beef pie served with mushy peas, mash and gravy.

Rag & Famish Hotel
In North Sydney, The Rag & Famish serves up excellent pub grub to the corporate crowd and the schnitty set. Just like the vibe of the pub itself, the beef and Guinness pie is classic. Made fresh each morning, it has a crispy, crunchy lid, chunks of meat, and lashings of gravy. Enjoy yours with mashed peas, chips or salad.
199 Miller Street, North Sydney
The Pie Tin
The Pie Tin serves up steaming sweet and savoury hot pies as well as wine and craft beer. All pies are freshly made on-site, and the display cabinet is the stuff dreams are made of. The shepherd's pie is amazing, and the pumpkin, feta and silverbeet pie will please any palate, vegetarian or not.
1A Brown Street, Newtown
Flour and Stone
What’s better than a Sunday roast? A Sunday roast in pie form! At this bustling bakery, the braised lamb, potato and rosemary pie with a puff pastry top is a flavour explosion. The space fits a dozen people at best, so we recommend getting your pie to go and wandering over to Cook + Phillip Park.
53 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo
The Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay
Perched on the water at Blackwattle Bay, The Boathouse has sparkling views to go with Sydney’s most legendary snapper pie. Fluffy yet filling, it’s stuffed with snapper, smoked tomatoes and mash, and the fancy setting adds to the experience. The restaurant is right by The Fish Markets, so it’s a sin to leave without ordering up a side of freshly shucked oysters.
123 Ferry Road, Glebe
Infinity Bakery
The perfect pie has a crispy, flaky lid, a golden pastry, and a chunky, moreish filling – this bakery has it down to an art. There are four pies on offer (the steak and mushroom is a crowd favourite), as well as regular specials. While you’re there, pick up some freshly baked pastries – you’ve earned it.
Darlinghurst, Manly and Paddington
Bourke Street Bakery
Made with local, organic produce, the beef brisket, red wine and mushroom pie is a must from this Sydney institution. If you’re starving, the beef, beer, bacon and cheese mash pie should sort you out. Bourke Street Bakery is also known for its sausage rolls, so there’s no judgment if you get one of each!

Black Star Pastry
Home of the strawberry, watermelon and rose cake, Black Star Pastry also whips up a mean meat pie. Thanks to Christopher The’s team of pastry chefs, the pies are worth it purely for their flaky, buttery shells. The fillings are something special, take the lamb shank pie; organic and slow-cooked with red wine, it is a delight from start to finish.
Newtown, Rosebery, Sydney CBD
Funky Pies
After a day at the beach, Bondi locals make a beeline for Funky Pies. Along with the usual hearty meat pies, there are vegan and gluten-free varieties on offer with fun names like No Wurry Curry, Chilli Non-Carne and Eezy Chic'n Cheezy. To add to the feel-good factor, the shop is all about fair-trade coffee and biodegradable packaging.
2/144-148 Glenayr Avenue, Bondi Beach
The Upper Crust
In the Northern Beaches, this pie shop has legions of fans, and often lines snaking around the corner. Finding it hard to choose? opt for the award-winning tender beef and Burgundy, the Mexican (heads up, it’s a little spicy), and a chicken, avocado and brie that’s as satisfying as it sounds.
