The Hunter Valley’s Most Beautiful Accommodation and Vineyards

Only a couple of hours from the big smoke lies the Hunter Valley, where boutique stays are as sought after as quality drops. Much like the vineyards, there’s a range of accommodation options for Sydneysiders to choose from. Whether you’re in search of a destination vineyard, or an entire weekender, here are the most beautiful venues to drink, stay, or do both.

Boutique Stays

Casa La Vina

A little bit of Marrakech is found in the Hunter, and it’s called Casa La Vina. The Moroccan-style escape is a boutique stay comprised of three luxury villas, ideal for a romantic getaway. Quality vineyards aren’t far but most have to drag themselves away from the outdoor spa. Each villa has its own courtyard, built-in fireplace and rustic, southwestern touch – and it’s adults only.

The Convent

A self-described ‘European luxe meets Hamptons Long Island’ boutique hotel, The Convent offers the most luxurious of country guesthouse stays. With 19 intimate guest rooms - each with their own details. Set in the premier wine region of the Hunter, Pokolbin, vineyards lie close by while the estate’s restaurant and outdoor setting offer adequate entertaining. A perfect romantic weekender or conference venue (yes, it does both).

Valleyfield Escape

A boutique Hunter retreat can be found at Valleyfield Escape, donning a name with a nod to its offerings. Home of Italian chef, Armando Percuoco, the retreat sits within 230 acres of land where olives, herbs and plants are farmed (which are often used in Percuoco’s restaurant, Buon Ricordo, which delivers to villas). You’re bound to see some kangaroos from the bath, which holds inspiring views.

Vinden Estate Wines Hunter Valley Accommodation Sitchu

Boutique Stays With Wineries

Vinden Estate Wines

A family-owned boutique winery that only sells to the finest restaurants and from their cellar door. The Vinden family’s estate in the Hunter is the stuff dreams are made of, from the vineyard to an intimate fine dining experience. For the full experience stay the night in their colonial homestead that has views of their vineyards and the Brokenback Ranges. You won’t forget the wake up here.

The Carriages

Feel like cosying up beside an open fire after an afternoon of wine tastings? Look no further than The Carriages. The boutique hotel feels more like a French country house with just 10 rooms housed beside the award-winning vineyard. For the warmer days there’s a swimming pool, tennis court and enviable garden and breakfast baskets are delivered to your door each morning.

Halls Road, Pokolbin

Harkham Windarra Winery

A small family owned and operated winery, Harkham Wines have quality at their heart. With a self-described manifesto to produce ‘pure and honest’ wines, Harkham’s vineyards and winemaking processes are all things sustainable. Amongst the quality drops now lies a recently refurbished lodge so you can follow a wine tasting with an evening beside the vines. The views of the Brokenback Ranges are picturesque while, most importantly, the walk from the cellar door is short.

Calais Estate Cellar Door

Boutique Vineyards

Calais Estate

If a day trip is on the cards, don’t miss the most picturesque vineyard in the Hunter. Calais Estate is an old-family owned boutique winery with a recently refurbished estate. Modern Australian meals and tapas dishes are found at the Verandah restaurant while gourmet picnic packs allow cheese-enthusiasts to sit by the lake. The wine varietals are aplenty and the view date-worthy.

151 Palmers Lane, Pokolbin

Hart and Hunter

A newbie on the boutique winery scene, Hart and Hunter only opened in 2009 but the quality drops are getting noticed. Run by two couples in the Hunter Valley, the estate now has a cellar door where canapes can accompany wine tastings and a modern touch leaves its mark on everything from the wine bottles to the fit out. A unique pitstop which should be revelled in for a couple of hours.

463 Deasys Road, Pokolbin

Krinklewood

A little bit of France lies in the Hunter Valley, where biodynamic, organic wines are found too. Nestled in the quieter side of the Hunter Valley, Krinklewood is a small, boutique winery inspired by the French and sustainable winemaking. We recommend an afternoon pitstop here where you can enjoy the Parisian-style cellar door and a few vinos accompanied by a cheese platter or two. As they say, do as the French do.
