5 Ways to Commemorate ANZAC Day in Melbourne
From dawn services to ANZAC biscuits, these are the ways we are remembering our Aussie heroes this ANZAC Day.
The 25th April is one of the most significant days in Australia’s national calendar. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect and pay respect to the contributions made by servicemen and servicewomen, past and present, for our country. Across Melbourne, there’ll be a number of ways to mark the occasion while staying safe and distanced, whether from home or in your local neighbourhood.
Light up the Dawn
Join Australians across the country in this simple yet meaningful act of remembrance that you can participate in from anywhere. At 6am, light a candle and stand on your driveway or balcony, observing a minute’s silence to commemorate all veterans and current service members.
Livestream the Dawn Service and Anzac Day March
To keep everyone safe this year, the Anzac Day March is going ahead with 5,000 veterans and 500 banner bearers marching along St Kilda Road. You can follow the proceedings from home, live and online on ABC, the Shrine of Remembrance's website or their social media channels.
Visit your local RSL
There’ll be hundreds of local services at RSLs across the state, making it a perfect opportunity to mark the day in your own neighbourhood. Check their websites to see how you can get involved, by attending a community service with your family, laying a wreath at a local memorial, or paying tribute on social media using the hashtag #lightupthedawn.
Join Legacy’s Anzac Biscuit Bake Off
Between now and Anzac Day, you can participate in this crunchy, sweet bake-off to help Legacy, a charity that supports the families of veterans. Homes, schools, workplaces and community groups across Australia are encouraged to bake the iconic bikkie to share with friends and family while collecting donations that will assist Legacy’s good work. We have a great recipe you can try for yourself!
Donate to the Anzac Appeal
Each year, RSL Victoria runs the Anzac Appeal to raise money for veterans in times of need. They go towards everything from emergency accommodation and employment help through to wellbeing programs and initiatives combating social isolation. Show your support for these important causes by making a donation through the ANZAC Appeal website.
After paying your respects in your own special way this ANZAC Day, we suggest you get out and about with some of the best hiking trails around Melbourne.
