the area

Multicultural, community-centric and increasingly on trend, Brunswick/Brunswick East are a much-loved part of Melbourne’s north. Once favoured by students and migrants, progressive gentrification has seen this laid-back neighbourhood’s stakes skyrocket. Now home to an array of chic bars, boutiques and restaurants, Brunswick/Brunswick East is one of the city’s most desirable postcodes.

Lifestyle

With traces of its Italian heritage still permeating the streets, Brunswick/Brunswick East is a charming mix of old European delis and buzzing live music venues, classic trattorias and sleek new bars. A vibrant mix of cultures, complete with a thriving drinking and dining scene, this hip northern locale is an increasingly popular place to call home.

Sydney Road is the lifeblood of the area. You’ll find swinging salsa clubs, jazz cafés, world-class restaurants and a cheerful array of Mediterranean wholesalers, snooker dens and bedazzled bridal wear. The neighbourhood’s famous Middle Eastern bakeries draw eager crowds from across the city to queue for classic za’atar pizzas and spinach and cheese triangles fresh from the oven.

But it’s not all about the high street action. A true bike rider’s paradise, Brunswick/Brunswick East is home to a number of scenic trails and parkland – none of which is more cherished than CERES. A rambling community environment park complete with animals, an organic market, a café, performances and an onsite bike shop, this place personifies the laidback Brunswick/Brunswick East ethos and is a welcome reminder that not all of this enclave’s edges have been smoothed over just yet.
