Melbourne Pubs With Fireplaces to Cosy Up to This Winter

Wine and dine your way through winter with crackling fires, hearty roasts and seasonal hot beverages at these charming Melbourne pubs with fireplaces.

The Rochester Hotel

During the cooler months, Melbourne’s pubs truly come into their own with venues lighting up their fireplaces, adding hearty roasts to their menus and brewing aromatic mulled wines. There’s nowhere that’s more inviting.

So, get ready to snuggle up! These are the best pubs with fireplaces Melbourne has to offer, and the cosiest spots to curl up in this winter.

The Cricketer's Port

Come winter time, this cosy Port Melbourne boozer is the place to be for a parma and a pint by the fire. The Cricketer's Port has been open since 1876, feeding hungry punters delicious pub grub, the likes of which now include steak tartare with caperberries, sourdough crisps and soft quail egg, house smoked ocean trout with pickled shallots, dill crème Fraiche and capers and fresh spaghetti prawns with house-made pasta.

69 Cruikshank Street, Port Melbourne

Orrong Hotel

The Orrong Hotel

With its fresh facelift and nostalgic menu, The Orrong Hotel is a stellar spot to cosy up with a glass of red by the fire on a wintery night. The recently renovated 150-year-old pub retains its charm with only minor tweaks made to the art deco exterior and gorgeous '60s furniture and mid-century art decking out the inside. The holy grail is, of course, the open fireplace, which you can perch yourself in front of on a Sunday night and dig into a $25 roast with all the trimming. The perfect winter night? We think so.

709 High Street, Armadale

Old Palm Liquor

The team behind Neighbourhood Wine have backed it up with another of Melbourne’s cosiest spots in Old Palm Liquor. Located on Lygon Street this winter warmer boasts a comfortable, lived-in feel via panelled timber walls and vintage bar stools, while the open fireplace is sure to be competitive real estate this winter. There are 12 taps pouring a host of interesting local brewers, but the wine list is the main star – a powerhouse list covering every region and price point, with plenty of minimal intervention picks among them.

133B Lygon Street, Brunswick East

The Railway Hotel

The Railway Hotel

A neighbourhood pub proudly marking the start of the Yarraville Village, The Railway Hotel is loved as much for its warm, laidback ambience as it is for its happy hour and menu. The food can be described as elevated pub grub featuring a worldly assortment of bites ranging from pizza to pan-fried prawn and ginger dumplings. There are comfy couches by the fireplace and two bars servicing inside while the cosy heated rooftop is intimate and weatherproof – a sought-after watering hole in both the winter and summer months.

35 Anderson Street, Yarraville

The Carringbush Hotel, Abbotsford

The Carringbush Hotel

At 130 years, The Carringbush Hotel proved that an old dog can indeed learn new tricks, when it relaunched as a fresh new pub that’s all about sustainability. Think metal straws, waste reduction and plant-based eats. Take a seat in the dining room and tuck into the likes of smoked potato and eggplant dumplings, maple teriyaki tofu and spiced sweet-potato steaks.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the cosy, friendly vibe, from the natural interiors to the warming fireplace, perfect for your next weekend catch up.

The Grace Darling Hotel

This Collingwood pub is in its element during the colder months, with its intimate candlelit bar, snug nooks and roaring fireplaces. If that’s not enough to lure you in from the cold, they also do a mean Sunday roast, served with winter vegetables in a cast iron pot.

114 Smith Street, Collingwood

The Palace Hotel, South Melbourne

The Palace Hotel

An unpretentious pub with a quaint fireplace in the bistro, but if you’re feeling like some fresh air you can grab a blanket and settle in under the courtyard’s glowing heaters. Still a little chilly? A quick snuggle with Billy, The Palace Hotel's resident Staffordshire Terrier, will easily fix that.

505-507 City Road, South Melbourne

Marquis of Lorne

Dig into a delicious roast by the fire. The Marquis of Lorne serves rotating specials, but the braised lamb neck with warm carrot salad, green olives and almonds is always a winner. The 150-year-old pub has an old-world feel, and with three floors to choose from, you can easily find a cosy nook to settle into. We're particularly partial to a dining room, with duo fireplaces bringing a crackling energy to proceedings.

411 George Street, Fitzroy

The Standard

Standard Hotel

Located in the backstreets, The Standard Hotel brings you the best pub food, cold beers and refined wine list that Fitzroy has to offer. It's gimmick-free and character-rich, having been properly dedicated to the fine art of the good times since 1865. The jewel in The Standard crown is the sprawling and iconic beer garden, designed to thrive in the most fickle of Melbourne weather. It accomplishes the remarkable feat of keeping the masses cozy in the winter months and festive in the summer sunshine with aplomb.

The famous front bar is forged on a winning combination of quality conversation, drunken limerick and retro décor, with an inescapable warm feeling of nostalgia that seeps into the dining room. There, a well-lit fireplace keeps locals and out-of-towners toasty as they dive into an eggplant parma or heaped plate of fish and chips. This Fitzroy favourite is one of the best Melbourne pubs with fireplaces to cosy up to this winter.

293 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy

Local Taphouse

The Local Taphouse

With two fireplaces – one indoors and the other on the rooftop terrace – you’ll be toasty no matter where you go at The Local Taphouse. Warm lights and wooden panelling evoke the feel of a vintage European tavern and the nourishing meals complete the scene. Think minestrone with cheddar toasts and cassoulet with confit duck.

184 Carlisle Street, St Kilda East

The Rochester

The Rochester Hotel

A neighbourhood pub with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude – The Rochester has live music on weekends, weathered pool tables and a bookshelf bordered fireplace. Come winter, their seasonal cocktail, The Soul Hugger, will keep you toasty. It’s a blend of mulled cloudy cider, brown sugar, ginger and spices served hot.

202 Johnston Street, Fitzroy

Wesley Anne

Wesley Anne

Pull up a pew in this converted 19th century church, it has a cool little fit-out that is dimly lit with candles and a fireplace. Wesley Anne's mulled wine is also winter relief in a cup, or pair a glass of red with their pie of the day, usually something slow-braised and hearty. Finish with a crème brulee and you'll feel warm right down to your toes.

250 High Street, Northcote

The Last Jar

The Last Jar

A rustic little tavern that’ll upend your notion of a rowdy Irish pub. From a homey room at the back, The Last Jar serves traditional dishes like Irish poutine, black pudding on toast and potato cakes. On Wednesdays and Sundays, sidle up next to the parlour fireplace for a session of traditional Irish music.

616 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne

Napier Hotel

Napier Hotel

This down-to-earth, parma-and-pint local is full of cosy neighbourhood charm. The walls are covered in memorabilia and the corner fireplace ever so inviting. They’re also serving pub classics, though slightly elevated – the fried chicken’s organic, the parma’s topped with smoked roo and the fish and chips come with fennel salad.

210 Napier Street, Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Wine

With its polished dark wood interiors, kitsch Tropicana décor and humming ceiling fans, Fitzroy North’s Neighbourhood Wine has created its very own brand of laidback colonial chic. Beyond their celebrated drinks list, this upmarket local has become a favourite thanks to a winning Sunday roast. Come winter, you’ll struggle to find a cosier spot than by the fireplace.

1 Reid Street, Fitzroy North

The Vale Bar & Eatery

The Vale Bar & Eatery

A true local's local, The Vale’s polished fit-out comes complete with a fireplace that lends itself perfectly to Melbourne’s dreary winter nights. With whisky, wine, and a soul-warming winter cocktail list, this cosy neighbourhood wine bar oozes humble charm.

169 Union Road, Ascot Vale

Trinket Bar

Trinket

Flinders Lane has its fair share of buzzing restaurants and happening joints to blow off some steam. From the outside, Trinket is one of those unassuming cocktail bars that could easily be missed, but once inside this beautifully unique venue, it’s all about stunning old-world charm. While the secret Narnia-style cellar bar gets most of the glory, we’re opting for the roaring fire and plush couches of the main bar during the cooler months.

87 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Bridge Hotel Werribee

The Bridge Hotel

Bundle up the crew into a car and head to The Bridge Hotel, a heritage, Art Deco-style Werribee boozer that's been reborn and brought to cosy new heights, thanks to the team behind Fitzroy's Marquis of Lorne. Go for the three crackling open fireplaces, Thursday steak nights and signature fisherman's basket, alongside a range of classic cocktails, local vinos and 10 rotating tap beers.

Side note: The forest-green tiled, dark-timber curved bar is a real beauty.

197 Watton Street, Werribee
