Youngs Wine Rooms
Drink Hawthorn East
They’ve kept the bare bricks and exposed walls of the long running Young's Auction House that came before, but everything else here is new, starting with the modern Mediterranean menu and imaginative cocktails. Spy dishes like steamed portarlington mussels with barley, onion, dill and lemon, and colourful drinks like the Helena Beat, featuring tequila, beet, dragonfruit, thyme and lime.
Hot summer days are just peachy atop Peaches, a new multi-storey bar that features a spacious rooftop for spritzing and sunsoaking. There are no dark and divey corners here, just lots of pinks, golds and suedes plus cocktails. Get the party started with ‘It’s Brittany Bish’, a blend of sloe gin, dry vermouth, basil and raspberries.
Mamma's Boy Trattoria
Here’s one mamma’s boy you don’t need to avoid – this Brunswick restaurant specialises in homestyle Italian cooking, with a few novel inclusions like a bruschetta bar offering a wide choice of toppings from porcini pesto, salami and grilled eggplant to black truffle, sausage and scarmoza. Mangia, mangia!
At Richmond’s new all day diner a calming yet unadorned interior focusses the spotlight on food, which in comparison pops with vibrancy. On the plate are Japanese-inflected dishes like crab croquettes with yuzu miso, sweet tamagoyaki omelettes with grilled pork and cheesecake drizzled in matcha syrup for dessert.
Wonderpop & Deli
Word has already travelled far about this new CBD café’s signature offering – the ‘tradie slammer’ bravely sandwiches a full pie in between brioche buns and caramelised onion chutney. Even if your appetite doesn’t stretch quite so far, there’s plenty to love on the menu, including vibrant salads, decadent sweet pastries, oozy toasties, and of course, their full range of pies, encasing everything from humble beef to fancy confit duck with parsnip, honey and coffee jus.
