Weekend Getaways: 10 of The Best Victorian Country Escapes

Whether you’re looking for a chic place to base yourself while you explore some of Victoria’s gorgeous countryside, or you’re just looking to curl up in front of an open fire with a good book and a glass of red, we’ve got you covered with these gloriously relaxing country escapes.

An ultra-luxe getaway on the Mornington Peninsula, Jackalope is surrounded by vineyards and offers a lesson in glamorous design. One of the area’s most sought-after destinations, Jackalope is also home to a restaurant, a cocktail lounge and a food and wine store, all of which are off the same quality as their parent hotel; you won’t be hungry!

Moorabinda Lodge

Soak up the views over Yarra Valley from this lodge, perched on a hillside in Olinda. Moorabinda is a family-friendly country retreat that doesn’t skimp on the details. Plenty of glass means impressive views of the valley and with a fireplace and bathtub, we think we’ve found our happy place.

The Bales House, Trentham
The Bales House
Rustic charm with all the comforts of luxury accommodation, take a look at The Bales in Trentham. Built using straw bales, stone and recycled timber, it’s an eco-haven that’s barely five minutes stroll from Trentham village. With its log fire and plentiful amenities, The Bales is a good spot to head for a family getaway.

81 Blue Mount Road, Trentham

A vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula that has thankfully diversified into offering accommodation, a bistro and yoga. Polperro’s individual villas overlook 25 acres of vines, the villas themselves are beautifully appointed and have the most luxurious, inbuilt bathtubs we’ve seen – perfect for kicking back with a loved one and a glass of local wine.

The House on Higgs Lane

This cosy cottage has all the country charm! In the hills of Wandiligong, it’s a good spot to base yourself to explore the delights that Bright has to offer – wine, produce and some excellent walks. If it’s snow that you’re after, The House on Higgs Lane is also close enough to ski slopes to make it a great winter escape.

The perfect base for exploring the Dandenong ranges, Clarendon Cottages provide an oasis of quiet charm, perfect for a country escape. There are three self-contained cottages, all have a warm, homely feel to them, though ‘The Stables’ is our favourite – mainly for its spacious interiors that cater to two couples or a small family.
