Australia’s Top 10 Romantic Accommodation

Maybe you’re honeymoon hunting. Maybe you’re celebrating an anniversary or engagement. Or maybe you just want to escape for the weekend (go on, you deserve it). Whatever the reason, there’s no need to hop on a long-haul flight. Our country is dotted with retreats that turn up the romance.

From idyllic islands to outback oases and chic city hotels, these are 10 of Australia’s most swoon-worthy stays.

The Vineyard Retreat, SA

To sip your way through South Australia’s most exciting wine region, jet to The Vineyard Retreat in McLaren Vale. Set on a working vineyard, there are four chic cottages (as well as a bubbling hot tub) hidden among the vines. They’re self-catered stays, but you’ll arrive to a kitchen stocked with fresh produce from the region, and the owners are on hand to organise wine tours, bikes and even private chefs.

165 Whitings Road, Blewitt Springs, SA

QT Sydney, NSW

Sydney loves showing off, and the QT loves showing its guests a good time. It’s the perfect match. Inside the iconic Gowings and State Theatre buildings, the boutique hotel is cool and subtly sexy, with burlesque-dressed staff, a day spa, and a restaurant that goes above and beyond. The rooms are plush, and decked out with designer pieces, DIY martini kits and oversized baths.

49 Market Street, Sydney

Saffire Freycinet, TAS

Tassie’s Freycinet Peninsula is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and Saffire really raises the bar for romance – so much so that it was named the best luxury hotel in the world back in 2014. With just 20 suites (which are perfectly positioned for privacy), you’ll wake up to peaceful views of white-sand beaches. The only must-do is a meal at Palate Restaurant – but we’d add the helicopter tour over Wineglass Bay too.

2352 Coles Bay Road, Coles Bay, TAS

qualia, QLD

In Latin, qualia means ‘deep, multi-sensory experiences,’ and that’s exactly what you’ll get at this five-star resort. Perched on Hamilton Island, qualia has 60 private pavilions, most of which have their own plunge pool overlooking the sapphire waters of the Great Barrier Reef. If you can peel yourself away from your pavilion, you’ll find bars, restaurants, two infinity pools, and a day spa.

20 Whitsunday Boulevard, Whitsundays, QLD

Halcyon House, NSW

On the golden shores of Cabarita Beach, Halcyon House is gorgeous – and if you manage to score a room, that’s one way of saying ‘I love you.’ Inspired by the Amalfi Coast, it’s a design-lover’s dream, and none of the 21 rooms are the same. Spend the day soaking up the sun by the pool, and then dress up for a date night dinner at the two-hatted Paper Daisy.

21 Cypress Crescent, Cabarita Beach, NSW

Spicers Sangoma Retreat, NSW

Nestled in 10 acres of wilderness in the Blue MountainsSpicers is built for romance. And we mean that: the resort is adults-only, with just eight striking suites. The rooms have freestanding tubs, fireplaces, and wraparound balconies with day beds begging to be sunk into. While you’re there, sign up for the Sangoma Signature Kahuna, a couples massage by twilight.

70 Grandview Lane, Bowen Mountain, NSW

Snooze under the desert stars at Longitude 131, a safari-style resort that offers postcard views of Uluru from your pillow. It’s intimate, with just 16 luxury lodges plus a lounge, library, bar, and Spa Kinara, where the treatments feature outback botanicals. In the evenings, you can cosy up in a swag to watch the sunset from your balcony, or dine and sip on sundowners at the Dune Top.

Yulara Drive, Yulara, NT

Lake House, VIC

Lakeside luxury meets rural relaxation at this resort in Daylesford, a charming town known for its mineral springs and Victorian architecture. The Lake House is romantic without even trying. Sitting on six acres of rolling countryside, it’s famous for three things: its award-winning cellar, chef-hatted restaurant, and the Scandi-style Salus Spa, which has treetop hot tubs. Bliss.

4 King Street, Daylesford, VIC

Paperbark Camp, NSW

For your own home among the gum trees, escape to Paperbark Camp. In Jervis Bay, the safari-style retreat is made up of 12 canvas tents with beds, showers, private decks and roll-up walls so you can decide how close to get to Mother Nature. If you’re celebrating something special, book the King Deluxe Tent, which comes with a freestanding bath and candles. Hello, romance!

571 Woollamia Road, Woollamia

Injidup Spa Retreat, WA

Need an(other) excuse to visit the Margaret River wine region? Injidup is a bit of an insider secret, and as idyllic as it gets. Perched on a clifftop, the views from the 10 villas are out of this world, spanning 180 degrees of sparkling sea, sandy shores and lush wilderness. Relax with a couples spa treatment, then stargaze and tuck into a gourmet picnic on your deck for dinner.
