In Sydney, we take our ice cream very seriously, and you need only look to the guys of Messina to know what we’re talking about. Sydney’s slew of ice cream stores keeps the sweet tooth cravings at bay, but when you’re wanting to up your ice cream game there are certain establishments that are a standout favourite. This summer work your way around these stores. #noregrets.
Another Marrickville institution, Gelato Franco takes things old school, with their emerald green walls, wood-panelled windows and their gelato served up in vintage glass dishes. The store has no sign, but can afford to be discreet with the award-winning shop drawing in crowds. There’s a focus on quality over quantity here, with small-batch gelato and ten staple flavours. Another five flavours always serve up a surprise though.

Bellingen Gelato use all-natural ingredients and tend to win awards for it. The small gelato bar began in Bellingen but has grown so popular they opened a second store in Rozelle. With a limited range displayed each week, flavours are on rotation but here’s a sneak peek: watermelon and mint, pear and spiced red wine, rhubarb apple and ginger, and dark chocolate mousse. *Deep breath*. Persian date, peanut butter and honey...it goes on, and on.
