Meat-free Creations: Sydney’s Best Veggie Burgers

Sydney’s burger scene is thriving to say the least. With a plethora of burger joints offering nearly every combination of flavours you can imagine, there has never been more choice for those looking for meat-free options. These vegetarian burgers in Sydney will leave you feeling good about your waistline and the environment.

Soul Burger

Unofficial kings of the plant based burger, Soul Burger consistently provides a swathe of mouth-watering creations. Give the plant based BBQ pulled pork burger a try, with chipotle mayo, shredded carrot, veggie slaw and aioli or the plant based chilli beef burger with sriracha aioli, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and tomato relish for a spicy hit.

Randwick, Glebe, Parramatta

4 Ounces Burger Co

If you’re into both hip hop and sustainability, 4 Ounces is your kinda place. Their two tofu burgers stand out on the menu. The RZA’s Southern fried smoked tofu, Westmont pickles, chilli and golden turmeric kraut, smoked sesame cheese and vegan house sauce is deserving of a standing ovation. If you’re into truffle be sure to get around The ASAP – its deep-fried truffle mac and cheese is out of this world.

Burger Project

You just ‘gotta try Burger Project’s mushroom burger. The Magic Mushroom stacks a crumbed confit mushroom atop cheese, onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce and secret sauce for a super satisfying creation. Be sure to add a soft-serve to your order, the Nuts About Chocolate is a must with Valhrona Chocolate ice-cream, praline and white chocolate.

Sydney, Broadway, Bondi Junction, Parramatta and North Ryde

Burgers Anonymous

The fittingly named ‘Shroomburg’, Burgers Anonymous’ vegetarian burger teams a crumbed mushroom pattie, lettuce, onion, ketchup and special ‘BA’ sauce between their buns. The ‘Peace Out’ adds American cheese, onion rings, lettuce, tomato, Hickory BBQ and Ranch sauce to the crumbed mushroom pattie. All their burgers are available nude, so you can forgo the buns and fill up on a side of truffle fries with parmesan instead.

31 Cameron Street, Balmain

Bonditony’s Burger Joint

Let the team at Bonditony’s rock’n’roll you into burger heaven with their Johnny Collide vegetarian masterpiece. Starting with a house-made corn and chickpea pattie, crispy onion rings, sautéed mushrooms, hi-melt cheese, roquette leaves, tomato relish and honey infused aioli are piled onto a fresh home-made bun. Adding pickles and some fried jalapenos is always a good idea, and good luck turning down the gravy loaded fries. #cheatday

144 Glenayr Avenue, Bondi Beach

Five Points Burgers

While it may typify all that is good about the classic New York burger, it’s the meat-free Staten Island construction that will have vegos weak at the knees. With roast Portabello mushroom, cheese, tomatoes, marinated peppers, tzatziki and iceberg lettuce, you’ll hardly have space for a serve of beer battered chips, let alone the drool-worthy salted caramel shake.

Ume Burger

Bar Ume’s sister venue in Barangaroo places their uber popular Japanese style burgers centre stage for their masses of devotees. The Kakiage Burger is the joint’s vego option – vegetable fritter topped with nori mayo, shredded cabbage and tonkatsu sauce, accompanied by a host of sides (we’re all about a seaweed salad). Wash it all down with a house made passionfruit ginger soda.

Wulugul Walk, Barangaroo

East Sydney Hotel

Reflected in its title, this elaborate vegetarian burger offered at Woolloomooloo’s East Sydney Hotel can be made vegan if you desire. The ‘Magical Mushy and Super Cheese Burger’ is a wondrous tower of truss tomato, buttery lettuce, diced red onion, pickles, jalapenos, 2 slices of Monterey Jack, 2 slices of Jalapeno Jack and a slathering of 1000 Island sauce.

Corner of Crown and Cathedral Streets, Woolloomooloo

Bonarche Burgers

This lowkey joint is a veritable Leichhardt institution, with fans obsessed with the towering structures and generous chip servings. Vegans can rejoice in the ‘Babs on Fire’ creation, sandwiching a lentil and vegetable pattie, hummous, jalapeno, tomato, red onion, lettuce and sriracha between a fresh white, wholemeal or GF bun. The Portabello Mushroom burger is another beloved vego option, with eggplant chutney, feta, rocket, pesto and aioli.

14 Norton Street, Leichhardt

The Green Lion

Pioneers in plant based pub dining, The Green Lion is a godsend for vegetarians looking for a burger fix in the Inner West. Although offering a selection of plant based burgers, the Blackbean Burger with a spicy blackbean pattie, chipotle and slaw is the real deal and a popular favourite. Indulge in a Pavlova to make sure you’ve rounded out all those veggies.

726 Darling Street, Rozelle
