Staycation: Sydney’s best boutique hotels

There’s something special about having a Sydney staycation. You explore the beautiful city by day, sip on a cocktail by night (after all, you’re on holiday!), and then come home to a fluffy robe in a freshly made up room. Speaking of rooms, if you want to go boutique, you have a slew of options. Whether you want to be on the harbour, in the glitz and glamour of the city, or steps from the beach, there’s a boutique hotel you’ll love. Check in and check out of these stylish spots.

1888 Hotel

Another boutique gem by the Ovolo team, 1888 Hotel occupies a huge 19th century warehouse in Pyrmont. These days, it’s as industrial-chic as it gets, with exposed brick walls, wooden beams, and vibrant interiors. The staff are young, and the clientele hip, making happy hour a guaranteed good time, and it’s only a short stroll to Darling Harbour.

139 Murray Street, Pyrmont

Harbour Rocks Hotel

Located in The Rocks, the modern hotel is a beautiful contrast to the cobblestoned streets around it. The charming hotel has 59 rooms of varying sizes, as well as Scarlet, a fine dining restaurant, and Eric’s Bar, whose wine list is as long as it is impressive. Want to splash out? Book the aptly-named Harbour View Suite on the top floor.

Taking pride of place beneath the Harbour Bridge, but location aside, the heritage building has plenty to brag about. Each of the nine rooms offer views of the Sydney skyline and have a nautical, beachy theme with sophisticated finishes. But before retiring to your room for the night stop by Hotel Palisade’s exquisite cocktail lounge, Henry Deane.

35 Bettington Street, Millers Point

Establishment Hotel

Located inside a heritage building. The hotel itself has contemporary, chic interiors and designer rooms, plus some of the city’s best restaurants and bars under its roof. There are 31 guest rooms and two lavish penthouse suites on offer, and you can choose whether you’d prefer to stay in a room with a light or dark colour scheme.

5 Bridge Lane, Sydney

The Ovolo

With harbourfront views, it’s sprawling and spacious, and boasts 100 rooms with all the mod cons. Every room has high-end design touches, as well as a free mini bar (yes, really!), an Apple TV, high ceilings, and WiFi. Downstairs, the fairy-lit Lo Lounge is a bar, restaurant, game room and lobby in one, and the centre of the action.

The Old Clare

To mingle with the movers and shakers, book in at The Old Clare Hotel. After having a makeover, the Chippendale hotel reopened to immediate Instagram fame. Taking up residence inside two heritage-listed buildings, it features 62 luxurious rooms, a gym, library, three restaurants (including Automata), and its main calling card: a rooftop pool and bar.

1 Kensington Street, Chippendale

The Urban Newtown

Ever since it flung open its doors in 2014, The Urban Newtown has been wowing guests with its plush rooms, industrial interiors, and homely luxuries like espresso machines and huge TVs. It also nails its extras, like free wine and beer tastings. There are double, triple, queen and king rooms available, some of which have balconies and terraces.

52-60 Enmore Road, Newtown

QT Bondi

The ultimate beachside retreat, it has 69 studios and suites featuring art and all the mod cons you could want, along with views of the city or sea. If you’re planning to plant yourself on the beach for the duration of your holiday, this is the hotel for you. When you need a break, check out Bondi’s bustling bars and restaurants.
