Clementine McVeigh talks motherhood and raising a child in Bondi

Clementine McVeigh has travelled the world modelling, while stealing the heart of Sydney Swan star, Jarrad McVeigh. Now with her daughter Lolita in tow, Clementine juggles motherhood and career. Surrounded by the beautiful and iconic setting of Bondi Beach, we chatted to Clementine about how raising her daughter in Bondi stacks up against her own childhood in Auckland, New Zealand and Hanoi, Vietnam.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I was born in New Zealand, and spent many years growing up in Hanoi Vietnam where I attended a French school. I absolutely loved every minute of it. I look at Vietnam as my second home, and I feel very lucky to have had that experience in my life, it definitely shaped who I am today. At the age of 16 I travelled the world modelling and moved to Sydney in the year 2000 and made it my base to travel back and forth, now I call Sydney my home. I met my darling husband, Jarrad in 2005, got married in 2010 and then had our two gorgeous girls. We sadly lost our first daughter Luella to a heart condition; she was one month old when she passed. We were then blessed with our gorgeous Lolita, life is amazing and we appreciate everything we have.

What has motherhood taught you?

Motherhood changed my life in so many ways; the love you feel is incredible! After loosing our daughter, I now never take anything for granted, and don’t sweat the small stuff. I feel so blessed to be a mum, and I love every minute of it... apart from the sleep deprivation. We take Lolly everywhere we go, I can’t imagine our life with out her.

What do you consider to be the main differences when comparing your childhood, growing up in New Zealand and Vietnam, with Lolita’s in Bondi?

Growing up in NZ and Vietnam was extremely different to Lolita’s upbringing. Both so amazing, Lolita has that beach lifestyle… very relaxed, lots of friends close by, a buzzing little Bondi community. For me it was different cultures and languages. That’s why we love to travel as a family as much as we can; I think it’s so important for Lolita to experience many different cultures and countries. We definitely have the travel bug.

How long have you been living in Bondi for and what drew you to live there?

We moved to Bondi three years ago, we were living in Paddington for years before that. My husband decided to take up surfing and really wanted to move closer to the beach so we did. I said we could give it a go for a year and see how we like it, now we will never leave! We love the Bondi lifestyle so much; to be able to walk to the beach every day is heaven to us. We definitely live in the Bondi bubble and hardly leave.

As a working Mum, what does a typical day look like for you?

Juggling motherhood and modelling is amazing! I still get to do what I love and still be a mum. I have a very good balance of work and motherhood, that’s the fantastic thing about my job… I can pick and choose my shoots, Lolita always comes first and everything always just works out.

You do a lot of travel as a family, where are your favourite destinations?

We LOVE traveling!  Our favourite places to visit as a family are New York for Christmas and we just love Hawaii for a relaxing destination. We will never stop travelling, it’s our favourite thing to do! Lolly is an amazing little traveller so that makes it easy.

Where do you love to take Lolita in Sydney for Mum / Daughter time?

We go to North Bondi kids pool together a lot - it’s her favourite place. We also love going to Cali Press every morning for our coffee and juices.

Are there any great places in your area for mums to get together?

I have never been in a mothers group as such… I usually catch up with my friends at the cafes around Bondi, or the restaurants, we are spoilt for choice here in Bondi and pretty much everywhere here is child friendly.

What are your favourite things to do on the weekend as a family?

We love to pack a picnic of cheese and wine and sit on the grass at South Bondi and watch the sun set. Our favourite weekend breakfast spot is Brown Sugar; it has the most amazing breakfast. Most weekends are spent in Bondi… we hardly ever leave the Bondi bubble.

Best piece of advice you would give a new Mum?

Have a glass of wine! It’s called MOTHERS JUICE.
