Romantic Getaways: Daylesford & Macedon Ranges

Are you on the lookout for a romantic getaway in Victoria? One where you can change life’s pace into cruise mode, and one where you can eat, drink, and sleep somewhere so delicious and deliciously pretty, that you can’t help but look at your other half starry-eyed? Then it’s time to book a trip to the whimsical Daylesford and Macedon Ranges. 

With lovebirds in mind – Valentine's Day will be here before you know it – we’ve gathered together the ultimate list of romantic must visits in the area, all of which we’re confident you’ll fall madly in love with.


1. Visit Lake Daylesford

Lake Daylesford is a serene place holding many possibilities for romantic activities such as a taking a leisurely, scenic walk, going for a dip, or you can even take out a paddleboat and have your very own Notebook movie moment (we can’t promise white swans though).

2. Chase waterfalls

Accessed from Trentham Scenic Reserve Road, be sure to make your way to the stunning Trentham Falls — one of Victoria’s longest single drop waterfalls. For the best views, take the easy walk from the carpark to the viewing area, and don’t forget to pack a picnic with you.

3. Enjoy a couple spa day

Daylesford is Australia's spa capital, so a visit to the historic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa is a must. Here you can choose to soak in a private steaming pool of mineral water, as well as make time to book in a couple’s massage. 

4. Visit a lavender farm

If you’ve ever dreamt of frolicking among sprigs of lavender, hand in hand with your other half, then head on over to Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of Shepherds Flat, this property boasts European-style gardens, designed around original 1850s stone buildings. 

5. Go hot air ballooning

Should you wish to go all out, take the romance to new heights by going on a hot air balloon ride. Picture This Ballooning operates hot-air balloon flights over the region, offering what may just be the most romantic way to view nature’s best show.


1. Lake House Restaurant Daylesford

The inhouse restaurant over at Lake House Daylesford is not only easy on the eye, thanks to the sunlit space and delightful decor, but it’s also a two chefs hat eatery, plating up seasonal food matched with an internationally acclaimed wine list.

2. Wombat Hill House

Wombat Hill House sits in a playfully renovated 1940s caretaker cottage, right in the heart of Daylesford’s Botanic Gardens. Visit here for a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch, either inside by the open fire, or outside in the sunshine amongst the pretty kitchen garden.

 3. Sault

Perhaps one of Daylesford’s best restaurants, Sault is set on a spectacular 125 acre estate against a beautiful backdrop. Here you can indulge your culinary senses with their sumptuous menu, all whilst overlooking views of the lake and fields of lavender.

4. Trentham General

Housed in a former bank, Trentham General is a lovingly curated cafe, co-owned by one of Melbourne’s most beloved creatives, Lynda Gardener. This local has an all-day menu featuring many comforting classics, along with a cabinet loaded with sweet treats.

 5. Chocolate Mill

To top things off on a sweet note, visit the popular Chocolate Mill, located a short drive north of Daylesford. Here you’ll find the Hot Chocolate Cafe, serving hot chocolates, espresso coffees, cakes, and tarts, along with chocolate and ice-cream sundaes, and of course, freshly made chocolates.


1. Dr Abalone

Located along the popular foodie strip Piper Street, Dr Abalone is a chic wine bar that's brought a dash of European flair to the area. The wine list here includes many of the region's renowned winemakers, including Mount Towrong Vineyard, Glenwillow Wines and Granite Hills.

2. Passing Clouds Winery

The cellar door over at the Passing Clouds Winery will greet you with the scent of wood chips, courtesy of their warm and toasty fireplace. Here you can sample out the winery’s most recently released wines, including their proudly grown chardonnay and Pinot Noir offerings.

3. Animus Distillery Cocktail Lounge and Cellar Door

Also located along Piper Street (we told you this street was buzzing), is the lounge and cellar door of gin brand Animus Distillery. Take a seat and try out their extensive variety of gins, along with a range of fabulous gin cocktails.

4. Daylesford Cider Company

Daylesford Cider not only acts as a cellar-door, but there’s also a beautiful tavern with a patio courtyard here — perfect for soaking up the sun with a cider in hand. During winter, you can order a warm spiced cider instead and cosy up inside next to the roaring open log fire.

5. Mount Macedon Winery

Set on 80 beautiful rolling acres, Mount Macedon Winery is a boutique winery, boasting with panoramic views of the Black Forest Valley. Here you can indulge in wine, cheese and fresh local produce, as you learn about the range of their very own cool-climate wines.


1. Lake House Daylesford

Offering fabulous food and luxurious lodgings, Lake House Daylesford's amorous retreat is a dreamy place to spend the night. Featuring 33 elegantly styled rooms and suites, the hotel even offers additional services such as a butler service for evening drinks.

2. Villa Parma

Originally built in 1864, Villa Parma is one of the last-standing Swiss-Italian buildings in the Daylesford region. And while the bones of this accommodation offering still retain their rustic charm, you can expect to find all of the moden creature comforts that you are looking for in a romantic stay. 

3. Vintage House Daylesford

If you’d prefer to stay in a home away from home, rather than a hotel, consider a stay at the Vintage House Daylesford. This 1860's miners cottage on the border of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, has been renovated and styled as though it has been plucked straight from a designer magazine.

4. Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

Dating back to 1935, Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel has flourished into a romantically elegant boutique hotel, restaurant and spa. Surrounded by picturesque gardens, this charming stay even has a manicured miniature hedge maze.

5. Clifftop at Hepburn

Last but certainly not least is Clifftop at Hepburn, previously voted as ‘Australia's No.1 Romantic Getaway’ by Stayz in 2017. From the floor to ceiling windows with panoramic views, to the hanging daybed out on the deck — it’s the very definition of love at first sight.
