A Girl’s Guide to a Weekend in Berry

Head two hours south of Sydney along the coastline and you will bump into Berry, a stylish country town with so much warmth and charm, that’s it’s just downright, well, charming! Heritage buildings, an enviable foodie scene, boutique shopping, beautiful homesteads and wineries all play their part in the nostalgic lifestyle for which Berry is renowned for.

Berry’s year-round appeal and sophisticated edge makes it the perfect girls weekend. So, what are you waiting for? Gather the girls and work your way through all that is tasty, indulgent and relaxing about this South Coast gem.

For a girl’s weekend in Berry be sure to …

Start your day with a coffee hit.

Head to Milkwood Bakery and while you’re there you really need to order the sourdough (they’re renowned for it), or at the very least pick up a little treat for later from their selection of cakes and pastries. Or you can just head straight to Berry Donut Van (why delay the inevitable) for coffee and donuts, a winning combo.

Stock up on fresh local produce.

At Berry Produce Markets, local growers, producers and providores are at these popular markets every second Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month. Otherwise, drop into South Coast Providores, they sell gourmet food produced by locals as well as home-cooked meals.

Fit in a retail therapy hit.

Around Berry village, it’s brimming with boutiques and homeware stores that ooze country charm. Moss Nest is an eclectic treasure trove while Few and Far is a beautiful curation of homewares from around the world.

Cool off.

Make sure you take a dip in the ocean along Berry’s very own stretch of coastline, Seven Mile Beach. Surrounded by national park you and the girls will feel like this is your own private beach.

Soak up the vistas.

Take in the view at Drawing Room Rocks Bushwalk and Lookout. It’s a 4.5km return walk so don your walking shoes and be ready for some incredible views.

Grab a casual lunch.

Berry Sourdough Café and Bakery is housed in a rustic barn-like setting with in-house artisan bakers and two woodfired ovens, so you know that the food is going to be good!

Relax with a tea.

The Berry Tea Shop is a charming little tea shop-slash-tearoom and is the go to for a good old-fashioned morning or afternoon tea. Scones and jam anyone?

Indulge in a spa treatment.

There are a few choices here, depending on how many of you there are and what you’re after. Check in with Berry BeautyBeauty @ The Loft or Goodness Gracious Beauty

Treat yourself.

At Il Locale Gelato, they scoop up locally produced gelato, so does The Dairy Bar in The Treat Factory, but they also do really yummy sundaes and milkshakes. And we really should give Berry Donut Van another shout out, because they are famous after all.

Time for dinner.

Silos Restaurant is an intimate restaurant that is all about honest and fresh farm-style food. The views across the vineyard are beautiful, especially as the sun starts to set, then it becomes all about the rustic chic interiors.

Wine tasting.

At Silos Estate Cellar Door, taste the flavours of the Shoalhaven region in their fully restored 1870s building. Coolangatta Estate is a little further out of Berry, but it’s well worth the trip for their award-winning wines and beautiful grounds. The boutique winery, Two Figs Winery produce wines that are equally as impressive as the views that look out over the Shoalhaven River.

Before you leave, make some time to visit …

Kangaroo Valley

A short 25-minute drive inland is the hidden beauty of Kangaroo Valley. Surrounded by Cambewarra and Barrengarry mountains, this little gem may be on the smaller side but it packs a real punch. Antique stores, boutiques, cafes and tearooms have breathed new life into the weathered buildings.

Kayaking Kangaroo River

Whether it’s for cooling off in on a balmy summer’s day or soaking up the serene surrounds as you glide along in your kayak, Kangaroo River is meant to be explored on your own terms, or in a guided tour.

Yarrawa Estate Cellar Door

If you’re in the area over the weekend drop into Yarrawa Estate for some wine tasting. The grounds are gorgeous and you not only get to taste the wines but also their seasonal fruits, nuts and preserves.

Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop

A visit to Kangaroo Valley is incomplete without stopping by the Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop. The store itself is heritage listed and has a real old-world charm to it, and the pies are made fresh on site daily. The real crowd pleaser is the classic steak and mushroom.
