Set amongst the trees, Pike & Joyce boasts a state-of-the-art tasting room that takes in views of their single estate vineyard. When it comes to winemaking, they use old-world techniques and their restaurant changes with the season. Their à la carte menu delights, but the tasting menu, that can be paired with their Museum Wines, is a definite must.

Minutes from Adelaide Hills, along the foothills of Mount Lofty Ranges, Penfold’s Magill Estate is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries, not to mention one of the best wineries in Adelaide Hills. Dating back to the 1840s their Grange wine keeps smashing awards to this day, garnering a perfect score the past two years running. Pop in for a wine tasting tour (in English or Mandarin), or lunch at their fine dining restaurant which offers decadent degustation experiences. For something a little more casual, Magill Estate Kitchen has lunch and wine pairings.

At the Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard, all vines are hand pruned, and all grapes are handpicked, making these guys one of the few remaining wineries still employing these age-old practices. But that’s not all that’s cool about this place. Half the property is pristine bushland, and their rustic barn cellar door and Hatted Restaurant comes complete with a central open fire-place and panoramic views. The restaurant offers two-, three-, and five-course tasting menu, all of which is matched to their wines.

Sitting up high in the Adelaide Hills region, Golding Wines Western Branch Vineyard is a must, and one of Adelaide Hills’ best wineries. It boasts lush gardens, a landscaped terrace and a family-built sandstone barn. The barn itself was previously a farm shed, a wine yard workshop and a family home, but nowadays it’s set up as a fabulous tasting room and market kitchen restaurant where you can settle down to a delicious drop and moreish menu that’s designed to be shared.

On the edge of historic Hahndorf Village, Hahndorff Hill is not one to shy away from the town’s German roots. They make Austrian varieties, Gruner Veltliner, in four different styles, and their tasting experiences have won them several awards. The ChocoVino Experience has you tasting wines matched to the world’s most acclaimed chocolate, and the Wine Flight and Cheese Plate offer a selection of wines with four cheese and gourmet biscuits, all from their enclosed balcony.

For lovers of the rustic chic look, Howard Vineyard is a dream. With a cellar door that hovers over the lake, K1 By Geoff Hardy is one of the few wineries in the region that boasts lake and vineyard views. The deck is a popular spot to be. Still, inside, the handcrafted tasting bench, handmade by Geoff Hardy himself from a 400-year-old red gum from his Limestone Coast vineyard, is a neat spot to sip your way through a selection of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Shiraz. Round out the experience with a cheese platter.
